Excerpt from The Victors: A Romance of Yesterday Morning This Afternoon The Great American Novel, so frequently referred to by the Press, will be looked for in vain. It never can be written, because America is so vast, its interests are so various, its activities so far-reaching, that even Honore de Balzac, with all his forty or sixty volumes, could have done little more than draw the outlines of such a civilisation, had he been born a citizen of the United States instead of a citizen of France. The present volume, then, is merely a slight sketch of certain incidents that have come within range of my own limited observation and experience. It has been written and revised during the past five years, on the island of Manhattan in Eastern America, the island of England in Western Europe, the island of Capri in Southern Italy and the island of Islay in the Highlands of Scotland. Working on these islands, I have attempted to depict, in a measure, certain affairs that are supposed to interest a continent, aspiring to be the accurate reporter which early newspaper discipline exacted, rather than the imaginative novelist, so deservedly popular in our day. Whatever difference of opinion may exist regarding various American institutions, the world at large must admire the educational system of the united States. The three master steps of learning, Public School, High School, and University, may be mounted by any energetic youth, and no toll-gate bars his way. The only tribute expected from him is diligence and good conduct. It is my ambition to associate this book with the name of the University of Michigan, near whose home the story's action begins. Juliette Drouet's Love-Letters to Victor Hugo : Edited with a Biography of Juliette Drouet In the first portion we present the biography of Juliette Drouet in the form of a series of synthetic tableaux, each tableau summarising several lustres of her life. We thus avoid the long-drawn-out narrative, year by year, of an existence devoid of incident or adventure. In the second, we publish those letters which strike us as peculiarly eloquent, witty, or lyrical. In the light shed upon them by the preliminary biography, they form, as one might say, its justification and natural sequel. At the outset of her liaison with the poet Juliette does not date her “scribbles”; she merely notes the time of day and the day of the week, until about 1840; we have therefore been obliged to content ourselves with the classification effected by her in the collection of her manuscripts, and preserved by her executor. From 1840 she dated every sheet. Consequently our work simultaneously achieves more precision and certainty.
