What, they have asked, was the teaching in which that refined intellect and loving soul found rest? Was this peaceful and devout life the outcome of influences which have sometimes been described as tending to the subversion of the faith? IS our knowledge of that goodly company complete, so long as he who formed its true centre is known to us only at second hand - SO long as we see him only by a reflected light with more or less of Shadowy indistinctness? That this has been more or less widely felt, the inquiries which have been ad dressed (as I am informed by him) to the author of the Memorials as to the republication of his uncle's works is a sufficient proof. Circumstances having placed in my hands the responsibility of meeting or refusing to meet the want thus expressed, I have decided as the appearance of the present volume Shows, on the former alternative. Here he acquired that aptitude for German literature of which he afterwards became so complete a master. Augustus was sent to Winchester School the same year. On Easter Day 1806 their mother died at Lausanne. The beauti ful Duchess, their benefactress, had died a week previously. Next year Mr Hare married again, and became the father of three other children, one of whom afterwards \married F. D. Maurice. He died in 1815. Excerpt from Faith, the Victory, Vol. 4: Or a Comprehensive View of the Principal Doctrines of the Christian Religion The actual condition of the country, because of the deplorable and sanguinary war now waged, and of the blockade which is enforced, prevents us from procuring the many excellent works, which have been written and published elsewhere, for explaining and defending the doctrines of religion. Yet it is not only desirable, but even most necessary, that we should have some books of religious instruction for our people, and especially for the youth of both sexes, who, either in the schools, or under the paternal roof, arc at present receiving their education. Moreover, 'among those not of our church, there appears to be a growing disposition to become acquainted with Catholic doctrines, and to examine for themselves into the nature and grounds of our faith, and it is difficult for them to obtain the necessary books, or for the priests, from whom they arc asked, to furnish them.
