Excerpt from The Vikings Secondly, and yet more important in its results perhaps, archaeological science has, within the last half-century, made rapid advance, and the work of archaeologists on the rich finds brought to light during the last hundred years has given us a vast body of concrete fact, with the aid of which we have been able to reconstruct the material civilisation of the Viking period far more satisfactorily than we could from the scattered and fragmentary notices found in the sagas and elsewhere. The resultant picture calls for description later, but it is well to remember from the outset that it is a very different one from that commonly associated with the term Viking.' With this word of explanation and note of warning we may proceed to our main subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Vikings of the Baltic, Vol. 1 of 3: A Tale of the North in the Tenth Century Fornmanna Stigur.' matters of critical history to such authorities as Munch and Dahlmann, it is enough for our present purpose to point out the fact that the poetic treatment of the story of these Vikings, as it was rounded into shape in the Icelandic of the fourteenth century, has a truth and warmth and beauty of its own which far outweigh the worth of any historical skeleton, however care fully its dry bones may have been collected and strung together. Excerpt from The Vikings at Helgeland, Vol. 2: The Pretenders Ibsen himself has told us, in his preface to the second edition of The Feast at Solhoug, how the reading of the Icelandic family-sagas suggested to him, in germ, the theme of The Vikings at Helgeland. What he first saw, he says, was the contrasted figures of the two women who ultimately became Hiordis and Dagny, together with a great banquet-scene at which an interchange of taunts and gibes should lead to tragic consequences. The conception of the two women's characters was certainly not new to him, seeing that a similar contrast presents itself in his very earliest work, Catilina, between the aptly-named Furia and the gentle Aurelia; while even in Lady Inger of strat it reappears, somewhat disguised, in the contrast between Inger Gyldenl ve and her daughter Elina. While the scheme of The Vikings was still entirely vague, however, fresh influences, both of a personal and of a literary nature, intervened, and, transposing the theme from the purely dramatic into the lyrical key, he produced The Feast at Solhoug. The foster-sisters, Hiordis and Dagny, became the sisters Margit and Signe, and the banquet, instead of being the culminating-point of the dramatic action, became its mere background. Excerpt from The Vikings of the Baltic, Vol. 3 of 3 WE now return to the Vikings. After the sack of Tunsberg, they had moved north along the coast, passing through the net-work of islands which fringe the shore, and landing every afternoon to waste and harry the farms which lay nearest to them. This continual halting made their progress slow, and gave, as we have seen, the Earl time to collect his forces in Ships and men; but it could not be helped, for the cattle which they slaughtered each day were necessary to feed the fleet. So it hap pened that it was more than a fortnight before they appeared off Stad nor would have reached that headland so soon had they stopped to search each island, or fjord, which they passed. Let the reader imagine how long it would take. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Story of Rolf, and the Vikings Bow For the Icelanders were a wonderful people. To escape the tyranny of kings they settled a new land, and there built up the laws and customs in which we see the promise of modern civilization. Few early peoples had such a body of laws; few developed such manhood. N 0 better pictures of a law-abiding, rural, and yet valiant race have ever been made than in the tales which the Icelanders had the skill to weave about their heroes, those men who, at home in their island, or so far abroad as Constantinople, made the name of Icelander respected.
