My attention has thus been turned to the action of the Voice in Speaking; and occasion has been afforded me to pursue-more thoroughly, with the assistance of my son, Dr. Carl Seiler, the study of the natural laws under lying these sounds. Excerpt from The Voice Public Speaking: A Book for All Who Read and Speak in Public There is room for this little book. No other work, of which I am conscious, goes upon the same lines. My object is to notice and explain those principles, which, to my mind, underlie the rhetorical art. I have not written with view merely of making a book. I have that there is a cause, and have taken it up. It may be sumption on my part, but of that I am not the best judge. Excerpt from How to Train the Speaking Voice It is not the author's desire to under value the literature Of the subject, but rather, acknowledging to the full its un doubted excellence, to endeavour to sup plement it by attempting to meet a demand which has been repeatedly made to him for a work which would be at once brief, com prehensive, and practical - a work which would rigorously omit what might prove burdensome or bewildering to the average reader; while, at the same time, it should give, in a simple and readable way, practical. Excerpt from English Diction, Vol. 1: The Voice in Speech, a Practical System for the Improvement of Defective Voices, and the Attainment of Perfect Diction in Both Speech and Song My first book on this subject, entitled "English Diction in Song and Speech," published in 1912, was written originally for my classes in the New England Conservatory of Music, and, therefore, the greater proportion of illustrations and exercises contained therein are vocal. Since then I have found it advisable to deal with the two subjects of the speaking voice and the singing voice separately, as, in schools, the study of diction relates to speech only, and usually stops there. For the convenience, therefore, of Primary, Normal, and other Schools, I am offering in the present book a complete course of training for the speaking voice in a compact form, - based on the same principles as given in my first book, but developed more fully. Another reason for making a study of the language itself apart from singing is that the average student knows so little, at the start, of the correct sound of vowels, - of the right actions of the different articulation, - or of the need of flexibility of the speech organs, that only very slow progress in the training of the singing voice is possible in consequence of this lack of a proper foundation to build on. The present book, therefore, is intended also as a basic training for singers, to antedate that of my original textbook, "English Diction in Song and Speech." Let me add, that all that is theory, argument, and exposition of principles in this treatise on the speaking voice is addressed particularly to teachers and advanced students and not to the young people in Primary Schools. Excerpt from Training of the Voice There seems to be in this day but very little realization of the relation that a well trained voice sustains to successful public speech. So few of our public speakers today have trained voices that it seems that one is justified in the conclusion that they do not consider the training of the voice as necessary to successful speech. There are a few public speakers who are. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Speaking Voice: A Collection of Vocal Exercises What is a good Speaking Voice? We recognize it when we 'hear it - which is exceedingly rare. But no single standard can be chosen or adopted as a pattern. A Daniel Webster voice associated with a Chauncey Depew tempera ment would be an absurdity. The voice is a more direct manifestation of character and temperament than any other agency. If allowed a normal development it is, in its color and quality, the spokesman of the soul. In other cases it is a monument to neglect and misuse. An important question with every person, irrespective of business or calling, should be, How can I make my voice an effective instrument for the clear and convincing inter pret-ation of my thought and feelings to the world about me? In answer to this question we would say that the voice will reach its highest state of development only through three definite lines of training: I Freedom of Action. II Precision of Action. III Healthy Exercise. The exercises of this book have therefore been grouped under these three general headings.
