The Voyages of Lord Seaton to the Seven Planets (1766) is an interplanetary romance in the tradition of Cyrano de Bergerac's History of the States and Empires of the Moon. In it, the eponymous hero and his sister Monime travel to the seven planets of the Solar System on the wings of the genie Zachiel. They discover that the inhabitants of each world represent a human character trait -- Selenites are capricious, Martians bellicose, Venusians lovers, etc. Eventually, they return to Earth where Monime inherits the throne of Georgia. Also included in this volume is another high fantasy tale, The Water Sprites (1768) a colorful and extravagant if eccentric classic of fantastic fiction, which has closer affiliations with modern fantasy than most contemporary works in a similar vein.

“I was suddenly struck with the sight of a trail of rich red vegetation of several miles in the midst of the eternal snows. I approached with curiosity this oasis in the frozen desert.” An antique-shop owner gets a glimpse of the Red Planet through an intriguing artifact. A Martian’s wife contemplates the possibility of life on Earth. A resident of Venus describes his travels across the two alien planets. From an arid desert to an advanced society far superior to that of Earth, portrayals of Mars have differed radically in their attempts to uncover the truth about our neighboring planet. Since the 1880s, after an astronomer first described “channels” on the surface of Mars, writers have been fascinated with the planet, endlessly speculating on what life on Mars might look like and what might happen should we make contact with the planet's inhabitants. This wonderful collection offers ten wildly imaginative short stories from the golden age of science fiction by such classic sci-fi writers as H.G. Wells, Ray Bradbury, and J. G. Ballard, as well as hard-to-find stories by unjustly forgotten writers from the genre. Assembled and introduced by acclaimed anthologist Mike Ashley, these stories vividly evoke a time when notions of life on other planets—from vegetation and water to space invaders and utopian societies—were new and startling. As we continue to imagine landing people on Mars, these stories are well worth revisiting as gripping and vivid dispatches from futurists past.

On Religion Considered In Its Source Its Forms And Its Developments written by Benjamin Constant and has been published by Liberty Fund this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Philosophy categories.

Constant (1767-1830) regarded On Religion, worked on over the course of many years, as perhaps his most important philosophical work. He called it "the only interest, the only consolation of my life," and "the book that I was destined by nature to write." On Religion is essential reading and of interest for many reasons. As an analysis of humanity's religious experience, the work is notable for its methodology. Unlike previous writers with dogmatic commitments, whether theological or philosophical, Constant aimed to work with well-established facts and to relate religious forms to their historical contexts and civilizational developments. In this way, he was a precursor of the scientific study of religion. This work demonstrates that principled liberalism can turn a sympathetic as well as analytic eye toward religion, and in an unbegrudging way find an important place for it in free society. There are signs that this is a lesson that contemporary liberalism would do well to relearn.
