Erba. The Walk of Absence. gnOme, 2016. ISBN-13: 978-0692660454. ISBN-10: 0692660453. 50pp. $6.00. The apocalypse has already occurred, and we missed it. God is not dead, as Nietzsche or Mahfouz claimed, but he has simply left, as Samuel Beckett shows us. Man now lingers out of inertia, suspended indefinitely in a kind of purgatory between an abandoned heaven and a lukewarm hell—as always, but with no intention of bringing the journey to an end. Is poetry possible in the aftermath of this anticlimactic apocalypse? How to raise the stakes when there is nothing to lose? Can we devise better and more reckless games, now that the director has abandoned the show and the theatre is burned down? Perhaps the post-apocalyptic human will prove even more resilient than his predecessor, precisely because he lacks the will to live or die. And so, many of these poems were written with those in mind whom we did not lose to war, but to indifference, those that were taken not by death, but by the tepid current of everyday life… In this book of dark verse. Nostalgia, Loss, and Ruin decay in the sweet stink of Love . . . – E. Elias Merhige “Precise in its effort to provide readers with nothing less than a grid reference map of nowhere, each (poetic) line pointing back to the work’s auto-poetics of absenteeism, this essential collection performs what the ground often does when kicked up by the desolate gusts of a beautiful, insouciant wind.” – Liesl Ketum, Humbert Divinity School

The story of an ecstatic spiritual moment—and the search to experience it again When she was twenty-seven years old, writer Doris Grumbach had an epiphany. It was as if God were right there beside her, and she had a “feeling of peace so intense that it seemed to expand into ineffable joy.” After this fleeting moment, Grumbach became determined to recapture what she had felt. The Presence of Absence is the story of her fifty-year search. Grumbach is an open-minded and skilled seeker, and she writes candidly of the people she has met along the way. She details how she lost her path after decades of going to her Protestant church and writes of her turn to personal spirituality. In her quest to find God, she encounters a multitude of philosophies and gives all of them their due. She reads the works of Thomas Merton and Simone Weil, seeks the advice of her seminary-attending daughter, and studies the Psalms. Despite the setbacks of disease, injury, and ego, Grumbach perseveres in her pursuit of beauty and proof in the absence.

You try to embrace everything that gives you pleasure, and sometimes you find many things that bring happiness - at least for awhile. Sometimes you think you find lasting love, only to realize it's not the kind that lasts. What type of love endures? It's the kind that starts with a promise and a proposal, both which were made to every man and woman a long time ago. Each one of us has a choice to make. What will be yours? Equal parts autobiography, spiritual study, and allegory, The Absence of Love covers the pain and emptiness of counterfeit love, and the peace and joy of true, everlasting love.

In John 13:34–35, Jesus tells us to love one another in the same manner that He loves us. He then says this: "By this will all men know that you are my disciples" by the love they possessed and exhibited with each other. Jesus could have given a number of different ways which may have possibly identified us as His chosen people, but He hones in directly on this one all-important sign: love, not just love itself but the kind of love that would clearly connect us to the love He has given and displayed in us. It's the genuine and sincere love that we would share with one another that is the hallmark, the identifier, the tangible factor, which would reveal to the world that we are indeed believers in and followers of Christ. The New Testament speaks clearly and is saturated with imperatives concerning how and why we are to love God, our fellow believers, and even our enemies. If love would be the aim, the target, the bull's-eye, so to speak, how many of us are hitting the target? How many of us are even aiming for it? It is the negligence and lack of love that has compelled me to write this book.It has grieved me so deeply to see and experience that absence of love from so many who profess to be Christians, yet the constant mean-spirited behavior has clearly spoken the opposite of what love is and what love does. It grieves me even more deeply to discover the same behavior that I can be guilty of personally if and when I allow selfishness to rule my own thoughts and actions. I find myself in need of constant repentance. My experiences have been painfully real as they pertain to an absence of love in God's people. It has caused me to cry out for more and more of God's patience and grace to love.I believe that if we are lacking in love for others, it is because we are not properly connected to the source of love which is Christ, the vine. It is the love we have and exhibit to one another that matters most; and if we are lacking it, this should be of the utmost concern.

We may not all be broken in the same ways, but it doesn’t take long to feel the brokenness all around us. Sickness strikes, careers come to an end, dreams are shattered, relationships crumble, marriages fall apart, and children rebel. If we are not careful, we allow the brokenness to define us. Peace in the Brokenness is where the truths of Scripture and the brokenness of life collide, bringing hope to the reader that soul-resting peace is not only available but can be found in the midst of our most shattering circumstances.

Winner of the 2012 National Translation Award “What Sinan [Antoon] has done with In the Presence of Absence is a kind of miraculous work of dedication and love. Reading this volume is sheer enjoyment and sublimity.” —Saadi Yousef “There are two maps of Palestine that politicians will never manage to forfeit: the one kept in the memories of Palestinian refugees, and that which is drawn by Darwish’s poetry.” —Anton Shammas One of the most transcendent poets of his generation, Darwish composed this remarkable elegy at the apex of his creativity, but with the full knowledge that his death was imminent. Thinking it might be his final work, he summoned all his poetic genius to create a luminous work that defies categorization. In stunning language, Darwish’s self-elegy inhabits a rare space where opposites bleed and blend into each other. Prose and poetry, life and death, home and exile are all sung by the poet and his other. On the threshold of im/mortality, the poet looks back at his own existence, intertwined with that of his people. Through these lyrical meditations on love, longing, Palestine, history, friendship, family, and the ongoing conversation between life and death, the poet bids himself and his readers a poignant farewell.

Absence is one of those commonplace words that can prove oddly resistant to definition. The poems in this collection undertake the work of defining absence in a number of contexts, most painfully that of the premature death of a child.
