Excerpt from The Workers at War I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people, whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect Union, one and inseparable, established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies. - William Tyler Page. I further am of the faith that each and all of these can best be realized through democracy in industry which will secure and assure to all the people a fair profit to the producer, a fair wage to the worker, and a fair price to the consumer. Excerpt from Workers and War So says the German Chancellor, twice over, in the German White Book, attempting thereby to justify himself. Russia (according to one sided assertions from Germany, which are as untrustworthy as all similar statements from the same source) was the first to mobilize. Therefore although Russia publicly undertook to suspend her mobilization if only Germany would consent to a European Conference on the Servian question - therefore it was Russia who really began this war. Excerpt from Women War Workers: Accounts Contributed by Representative Workers of the Work Done by Women in the More Important Branches of War Employment They are not given to self-advertisement; the girl-worker in a high-explosive factory who goes home every night with clothes stained yellow has no need to tell any one what her share in the struggle is. Neither is any one who has seen a bus-conductress at the end of a day's work likely to forget that women do man's work.' I have talked to practically a whole street of women, widowed or bereaved by a naval engagement, and met with nothing but high courage and of all parts played by women in this war surely none is harder than this. Originally published in 1918, the story centers around the characters that live and work at an army support institution during WWI. Charmian Vivian (Char), the charismatic Director, runs the Depot like an amateur dictator a la P.G. Wodehouse's Roderick Spode. She uses tyranny and the cult of personality to overwork her employees and to take over other operations like a café that are not her concern. Enter Grace Jones, an archdeacon's daughter, who has moved to the area to contribute to the war effort and who is also, upper-class. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Excerpt from Travel Orders; Press On: The Note Book of a War Relief Worker Surely in this age none but the brave dare to ask and search for poetry. The Sunday before Christmas, 1918, a brave entertainer made this statement to a war worker: The boys are begging for poetry. I have looked everywhere in Paris and can find nothing suitable. I dread returning to Coblenz with out more poetry. Can you help me find some? In France, the makers of doughnuts made doughnuts and the makers of poetry made poetry. In each case, the doughnut and poemwere respected because they fed the boys. Aside from this, they had no honor. Thus one war worker became a maker of rhymes simply because the boys were demanding rhythm. The doughboy exemplified in his experience the words of Rupert Brooke who is quoted by his friend and biographer, Mr. Marsh, as saying: There are only three things in the world, one is to read poetry, another is to write poetry, and the best of all is to live poetry. In France, the American Expeditionary Forces and the war workers lived every phase of poetry and thus it was that the doughnut maker lived or made batches of doughnuts by day while the war worker lived or made batches of poetry by night. Everywhere in France and with the Army of Occupation, this work was done for one purpose - to make the way easier for the manly boys who were brave enough to fight, and ask for poetry, those same boys who, after the Armistice, waited, watched and prayed for Travel Orders, which would enable them to return to civil life and Press On toward the home of perpetual peace. Excerpt from Front Lines These tales have been written over a period running from the later stages of the Somme to the present time. For the book I have two ambitions - the first, that to my Service readers it may bring a few hours of interest and entertainment, may prove some sort of a picture and a record of what they themselves have been through; the second, that it may strike and impress and stir those people at home who even now clearly require awakening to all that war means. I know that a great many war workers have been, and still are, bearing cheerfully and willingly the long strain of war work, and I very gladly and thankfully offer my testimony to what I have seen of this good spirit. Excerpt from War and the Workers: A Study Guide for the Use of Study Circles, Classes, and Individual Students on Questions Arising Out of the Great European War The aim has been to be as thorough and yet as concise as Of course it is not for a moment contemplated that any group of working men will attempt all the courses here sketched out. Such an attempt would require the lifetime of a professional student. But previous interest or study has made different groups or individuals eager to raise and try to answer certain questions, and we hope that any such may find in this little book suggestions as to how he may set about solving the problem which he desires to raise. We have only con sidered serious students who are ready to take time and trouble. Almost any one of the sections outlined is enough for a three years' course. For, after all, what the war has brought home to us is not so much our need of knowledge in order that we may contribute to a sound public Opinion on the crisis, but rather the vital importance of entire fields of study which hitherto have been to a large extent neglected. I have spoken of our aim but must say in honesty that none of the credit for the labour represented by this book belongs to me but I am glad, as President of the to introduce to our members the product of much wea. Experience and toil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
