Excerpt from The Water Birds of North America, Vol. 1 As this work will in all probability fall into the hands of those who have not seen the ornithological volume issued as a part of the Publications Of the State Geological Survey of California, it is proper that the origin and connection Of these two contributions to this branch Of American natural history should be here explained. The Act authorizing a geological survey of the State Of California, which became a law in 1860, required of the State Geologist, in addition to the topographical and geological work usually expected on such a survey, a full and complete description Of the botanical and zoological productions of Cali fornia. In accordance with this requirement, the efforts of the head of the Survey were, from the time of the beginning Of the work, directed toward the collection Of such material as would be Of value for use in the preparation of Reports in the various departments of the natural history Of California and the adjacent regions Of the Pacific coast. The establishment of a State museum Of geology and natural history was also contemplated - 'although not provided for - in the Act authorizing the Survey, as supplementary to the preparation of such Reports on the various branches of science as should make possible the study Of geology, botany, and zoology in the schools and colleges Of California and the adjacent States and Territories. The Survey as thus organized went on without interruption until 1868, when appropriations were withheld for two years but the work was not brought to an absolute stoppage, all the materials having been left in the hands Of the State Geologist, without any direction as to what was to be done with them, and also without any appropriation Of money to pay either for the care and preservation of collections then on hand, or for the continuation Of publications at that time actually in progress. Excerpt from The Water Birds of North America, Vol. 2 In Querquedula, on the other hand, the terminal portion of the tomium is strongly convex, and the posterior half cut away, as it were, so as to fully expose the lamellae. Through the forms occurring in the southern hemisphere, this genus leads directly to Poecilonetta, which in turn is intermediate between Nettion and Dasila. The two species of Nettion occurring in the northern hemisphere are much alike, the males being very handsome in plumage; they may lie distinguished as follows: - Com, Char. Adult males: Head and upper half of the neck chestnut-rufous, marked with a large patch of metallic green on each side the head, behind the eye; chin and upper part of throat dull black; nuchal tuft blue-black; lower part of the neck, upper part of the back, scapulars, and lateral parts of the body beneath, beautifully undulated with black and white; outer scapulars marked with blank and white; speculum bright metallic, green, the lower feathers black, tipped with white; crissum black centrally, creamy buff laterally. Adult females: Wing, only, as in the males; elsewhere varied with dusky and brownish white, the former prevailing above, the hitter beneath; the abdomen nearly or quite immaculate. 1. N. carolinensis. A broad white bar across side of breast, before the wing; inner webs of outer scapulars vermiculated with dusky and brownish white, the outer webs marked with a longitudinal lanceolate spot of black, bordered internally with a white line. Hab. North America generally. 2. N. crecca. No white bar on side of breast; inner web of outer scapulars wholly, and outer web partly, white; exposed surface of outer webs almost entirely black; undulations of sides, etc., much coarser than in N. carolinensis. Hub. Palaearetic Region, occasional in Eastern North America. Nettion carolinensis. The American Green-Winged Teal. Anas errern., var. Forst. Philos. Trans. LXII. 1772, 383, 410. Anas (Boschas) crecca, var. Sw. & . Rich. F. B. . A. II. 1831, 443. -Nutt. Man. II. 1834, 400. Anas crecca, "Linn." Wils. Am. Orn. VIII. 1814, 101, pi. 60, fig. 1 (not of Linn.). - Aud. Orn. Biog. Excerpt from Birds of Eastern North America This volume is in reality but an extension of, an enlargement upon and a combining of the "show me" properties of "Bird Guide - Land Birds" and "Bird Guide - Water Birds." The kind reception and enormous sale of these smaller books have fully justified my belief that a good, accurate illustration is worth pages of text for conveying an idea of the appearance, of a bird or for identifying one seen in the field. My schooling in this line was gained in the time when an occasional inaccurate woodcut served only to relieve the monotony of the solid pages of text. In those days the birds were "collected" and, with the specimen in hand, it required only time to discover what it was, from the pages of the old reliable "Coues' Key." Birds were more plentiful then and bird students comparatively few. Obviously such methods are impossible now when the birds are fewer and students numbered by the hundreds of thousands. A good pair of bird glasses and a good book will enable the bird student now to see and identify hundreds of species, and that without harming the creatures in the least. In fact, several enthusiasts have written me that they became so familiar with the. birds by means of pictures that upon visiting new localities and seeing new birds they were able to correctly name nearly all at first sight without referring to a book. Bird study is not a fad. It is a recreation and a most useful one. Its importance is shown by the fact that it is one of the requirements of teachers in nearly all states.
