Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Excerpt from The Indian This volume might be called one of recollections, for in it have been set down many memories of Indian life. The scenes described I have witnessed with my own eyes; the stories related are those which have been told me by the Indians themselves. These stories are introduced freely because the con crete example conveys a clearer idea of an event than an abstract statement, and because the story of the Indian should not be told wholly from the point of view of a race alien in thought, feeling, and culture. No narrative about any people can do them justice if written by one who is not in some degree in sympathy with them, and acquainted with their ways of thought and with the motives which govern them. Before an intelligent account of it can be given, the stranger race must be comprehended. Long association with Indi ans enables a white man ultimately to share their thought and feelings; and he who has reached this point understands the Indian. He understands that the red man is a savage and has savage qualities, yet he sees also that the most impressive characteristic of the Indian is his humanity. For in his Simplicity, his vanity, his sensitiveness to ridicule, his desire for re venge, and his fear of the supernatural, he is a child and acts like one. Excerpt from The Story of the Indian The books which are to appear in this series are intended to present peculiar and characteristic phases of earlier development in that portion of our country which lies beyond the Missouri River. The specialization of American history has found expression in numerous studies of the colonial life of New England, New York, and Virginia, indeed, all the Eastern seaboard, and in discussions of explorations westward like those of the Spaniards to the south and the French to the north, and of migrations away from the seaboard, like the movement across the Blue Ridge to Kentucky, and the various patriarchal journeyings which began the settlement of Ohio and the middle West. The final occupation of the real West has come about almost in our own time. The first white male child born in Kansas is an honoured resident of the State to-day, and Kansas is venerable in comparison with States and Territories beyond. Speaking roughly, the Missouri divides sections very dissimilar in certain characteristics of their evolution. Excerpt from The Indian Outlook: A Study in the Way of Service Parents are said to love their firstborn best, which is perhaps the reason why I would refer all readers to Chapters II and III of The Goal of I who for a more satisfying account of Indian religions. What really matters is that this book may help to call out England's response to India's call for service. Only those can really serve who love. And in the last resort we love because He first loved us. In the twentieth century it still is true that India will be served best by those whose lives have been refashioned by the old, old story of Jesus and His love. If the Son make India free, she shall be free indeed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Eastwards, or Realities of Indian Life Mr. And Mrs. Chantney, and a hurried farewell to his Sister, went off to an hotel in the neighbourhood. Here for a while their routes became different, as Hampton Was to go in a steamer with the heavy luggage from Southampton, while she journeyed across France a few days later, with her new friends, meeting again at Alexandria. Mrs. Chantney was quite an old Indian in her appearance and manners, although she was not at all an old woman. She had that worn, haggard look, which Englishwomen acquire after a long residence in the tropics, and was dressed fashionably and yet carelesslv. She was much less stiff, our heroine thought, than untravelled Englishwomen generally are, and altogether had a slightly foreign air which rather pleased than otherwise. She seemed satisfied with her young companion's appearance, and very soon commenced a series of lectures concerning her conduct on board ship, &c You know, my dear, she said, without any flattery, you are very nice looking, and there are alwavs a number of good for nothing young officers on board these steamers, who will try to persuade you that they are ready to jump overboard for your sake, while the truth is they are probably engaged to some confiding girl in England, or have sworn the same vapid oaths to every one they have danced with; and in fact have been so spoiled by the way the young women go on now-a-days, that they are insufferable. India is the place to put a stop to that kind of thing. Fifty men and twenty women only in a ball-room, soon brings Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Awakening of India During a recent extensive tour of India in pursuit of my duties as an American newspaperman, I was accorded a large number of interviews by eminent authorities, on important subjects relating to the In dian Empire. At that time it had not occurred to me to make use of these statements in any other way than originally intended, namely, to tell the people of the United States through the press something of present conditions in India. Upon my return to Eng land, however, it was urged upon me that these inter views should be collected into book form, especially in View of the great change wrought in India by the war. Accordingly I have prepared this volume, selecting such interviews as appear best to show the general situation, and adding to them certain facts collected during my visit. Controversial subjects necessarily have been dealt with, but I wish to state emphatically that the book is intended in no way as a criticism of the Government of India or of the Princes and people of the Indian Empire. Excerpt from The Making of Modern India The aim of this book is to provide some material by which to estimate the character of the forces that are making the new India, and the direction in which these forces are carrying her. They are of many kinds - poli tical, social, religious. Some of the most powerful are the ancient forms of thought and of belief which modern influences are modifying but by no means eliminating. At the centre of all these, influencing them and in fluenced by them, are those outstanding personalities, Indian in the texture of their minds and souls, who are leading their people into the unknown land of to-morrow. To conjecture what that future will be, to help in any way in forecasting what under wise guidance it may be, these are fascinating and baffling tasks. The fascination of them is not always realized as it should be by the British people upon whom lies the duty of undertaking them and so of opening a way for the advance together of England and India, as comrades and friends, With minds firm fixed upon the road To freedom - road that ne'er can weary one. Excerpt from The Music of India These differences are reflected in the music of the North and of the South, though we must not commit the mistake of thinking of these as distinct types of music. There is one Indian music, though there are many ways of working it out; and these all group themselves under the Northern and Southern schools. Distinguished as the Northern or Hindustani school and the Southern or Carnatic school, both are yet based on the principles stated in the ancient Sanskrit treatises on music. Excerpt from The Little World of an Indian District Officer I am a member of the Indian Civil Service, who, after serving for nearly twenty-nine years with credit, but without distinction, retired in the year 1903. This book is the story of a thought. From the time when I first landed in India to the time when I finally left it, my great wish was to find a way of blending the will of the British Nation, the para mount power, with the will of the people among whom I worked. AS experience grew there gradually came into my mind an idea of how that could be done. The very last thing I did for the Government of Bengal was to embody in a small book a working scheme for the purpose. The Government may be presumed to have thought well of the scheme, since it Spoke most favourably of the book, and bought copies of it for distribution to officers.
