Excerpt from The Way to Victory, Vol. 1 of 2 IN my last book Of collected dispatches From Bapaume to Passchendaele - I dealt first with the German retreat after the Somme battles to the Shelter, Of their Hindenburg line; then with the Arms battles which began with a strik ing victory and petered out into ininor actions when our troops, with grim perseverance and no light losses, contin ued to hold German divisions so that the French might strike more freely elsewhere; and, in the third part, with the battles in Flanders - those muddy, bloody battles Of last year - ending with the capture Of the ridges. All that fighting, so heroic, SO costly, SO disappointing as it seemed in its immediate and apparent results when in March and April Of this year, 1918, the enemy came sprawling back over all the ground we had gained, must be remembered in order to understand the happenings that followed - the incomplete success of the Cambrai adventure in November, the great retreat in March, the arrival Of the Germans on the Marne with their dreadful threat to Paris, and the strategy Of the French Genera-lissimo, the fine genius of Foch, SO patient in his waiting for the moment to strike back, so terrific when he struck, leading up to the glorious recovery and victories of the British armies in August and September. For in war as in normal life there are no isolated facts. Excerpt from The Way to Victory, Vol. 2 of 2 Looking back upon the last phase of the war, with more detachment of mind than was possible to me or to any man in the actual tumult of it, certain aspects of the military and moral situation of the armies in conflict, and of the Armistice which followed the German surrender, stand out in clearer detail through the dust and smoke and slaughter on the battlefields. The genius of one man, taking the highest risks with cool and thoughtful courage, dominates one's imagination in the retrospect of those days - the daring intelligence of Marshal Foch. He was fearfully handicapped by weakness of man-power immediately available as fighting units. His Army of Reserve was almost mythical in the blackest days of all when the enemy brought over all his available divisions from Russia, and struck blow after blow with enormous weight first against the British and then against the French, breaking through their defences each time and forcing them into rapid and perilous retreat. The British armies had been, as I have told previously, weakened to a tragic extent by the Battle of Flanders in 1917, when they lost 800,000 men in casualties, and then, before the German offensive in March of 1918, consented, generously and rashly, under strong political pressure from France, to take over a longer line of front. "Forster and Marston have delivered a stellar book that attempts to present an exegetical and Scriptural framework for the content presented in the book. Instead of beginning from a set of deductive theological assumptions and then attempting to support that system from Scripture, Forster and Marston examine Scripture and attempt to build their case directly from the text. The authors unabashedly admit that their views are very similar to those of Arminian and Weslyan traditions, but they state in the beginning of the book that they do not want to be labeled with these names, but want to construct a theology that is in line with the teachings of the first 300 years of Christianity. Anyone who reads their appendix will come to understand that the teachings presented in this book were the orthodox consensus of the early Church for the first 300 years, and that it was Augustine who introduced serious deviations into the mainstream orthodox Christianity of his time. Forster and Marston begin by describing the battle that is being waged between God and the spiritual forces that oppose Him. They examine the book of Job and see how this relates to the overall struggle. Then the authors examine the 9th chapter of Romans to see if this book is dealing with election and individual destinies, or God's actions within human history. The authors do an excellent job of arguing for their opinion that this chapter is speaking about God's involvement in human history and it deals with God's choosing of one nation or individual over another nation or individual to accomplish His purpose. Other sections of interest in this book are the sections on foreknowledge and predestination and the chapters on faith and works. The section on faith and works was particularly interesting because it relies on much of the teaching of the new perspective which has shed much light on how a 1st century Palestinian Jew would have approached Scriptural issues. The research, argumenation, and exegesis in this book are solid so every chapter is excellent, but the ones mentioned above were two of my favorites."--Amazon.com.
