Anthony Trollope's 1875 novel, ?The Way We Live Now?, is a biting satire of the wealthy and powerful in Victorian England. Augustus Melmotte, a wealthy financier moves to London and begins to gather investors for an American railway venture. When his daughter Marie takes up with the dissolute gold-digging aristocrat Felix Carbury, Melmotte steps in to block the union. Multiple subplots involving schemes to move up in society and thwart others from doing the same constitute a panorama of greed and desperation that makes The Way We Live Now Trollope's masterpiece.

The Way We Live Now is a satirical novel by Anthony Trollope, published in London in 1875 after first appearing in serialised form. It is one of the last significant Victorian novels to have been published in monthly parts.Comprising 100 chapters, The Way We Live Now was Trollope's longest novel, and is particularly rich in sub-plot. It was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s; Trollope had just returned to England from abroad, and was appalled by the greed and dishonesty those scandals exposed. This novel was his rebuke. It dramatised how such greed and dishonesty pervaded the commercial, political, moral, and intellectual life of that era. Plot summaryAugustus Melmotte is a financier with a mysterious past. He is rumoured to have Jewish origins, and to be connected to some failed businesses in Vienna. When he moves his business and his family to London, the city's upper crust begins buzzing with rumours about him-and a host of people ultimately find their lives changed because of him.Melmotte sets up his office in the City of London and purchases a fine house in Grosvenor Square. He sets out to woo rich and powerful investors by hosting a lavish party. He finds an appropriate investment vehicle when he is approached by an American entrepreneur, Hamilton K. Fisker, to float a company to construct a new railway line running from Salt Lake City, USA, to Veracruz, Mexico. Melmotte's goal is to ramp up the share price without paying any of his own money into the scheme itself, thus further enriching himself, regardless of whether the line gets built.Amongst the aristocrats on the company's board is Sir Felix Carbury, a dissolute young baronet who is quickly running through his widowed mother's savings. In an attempt to restore their fortunes, as they are being beset by their creditors, his mother, Matilda, Lady Carbury-who is embarking on a writing career-endeavours to have him become engaged to Marie, Melmotte's only child, and thus a considerable heiress. Sir Felix manages to win Marie's heart, but his schemes are blocked by Melmotte, who has no intention of allowing his daughter to marry a penniless aristocrat. Felix's situation is also complicated by his relationship with Ruby Ruggles, a pretty farm girl living with her grandfather on the estate of Roger Carbury, his well-off cousin. ...

The Way We Live Now—regarded by many as Anthony Trollope’s greatest novel—encompasses in its broad scope much of the business, political, social, and literary life of 1870s London. At its centre is the larger-than-life figure of Augustus Melmotte, a financier of uncertain background who rises to great heights over a financial speculation scheme involving plans for a railway in America. “I was instigated by what I conceived to be the commercial profligacy of the age,” Trollope wrote of this novel, and the work remains one of the world’s most ambitious fictionalized critiques of capitalism. It also provides unique insight into the operation of the late-Victorian literary world, into the dynamics of anti-Semitism in the Victorian period, and into a number of other subjects of continuing interest. More than that, it remains among the most readable of Trollope’s many novels. The Way We Live Now was initially published in serialized form in monthly shilling parts that appeared between February 1874 and September 1875. The full work was first published in book form in 1875, in two volumes. That same year a one-volume edition was published by Harper & Brothers in the United States. Both 1875 publications in book form included the illustrations that Lionel Grimshaw Fawkes had prepared for the publication in serial form; it is the one-volume Harper & Brothers edition that is reproduced here. This is one of a series from Broadview Press of facsimile reprint editions—editions that provide readers with a direct sense of these works as the Victorians themselves experienced them.
