"The claimants were several Whakatōhea groups, and they objected to the Crown's recognition of the Whakatōhea Pre-Settlement Claims Trust's deed of mandate. That mandate was for the negotiation of Whakatōhea's historical Treaty of Waitangi claims. The central complaint was that the Crown had breached the principles of the Treaty by failing to actively protect the claimants' ability to exercise their rangatiratanga and decide for themselves how they would settle their historical claims. The report looks at whether the Crown's decision to recognise the claims trust's deed of mandate was fair and reasonable and made in good faith. The Tribunal found that the Crown had failed to act reasonably, honourably, and in good faith and had thus breached the Treaty principles of partnership and active protection"--Publisher information.

"The Ngāpuhi Mandate Inquiry Report is the outcome of an urgent Waitangi Tribunal inquiry into 15 claims submitted by Ngāpuhi groups (including hapū and hapū collectives) concerning the Crown's decision to recognise the Tūhoronuku Independent Mandate Authority as having secured a mandate to enter negotiations with the Crown to settle the historical claims of all Ngāpuhi. The claims alleged that the Crown's decision was flawed and reflected its desire to settle all Ngāpuhi historical Treaty claims through a single settlement process regardless of the preferences of Ngāpuhi hapū. They argued that, in recognising the mandate secured by the Tūhoronuku Independent Mandate Authority, the Crown had failed to actively protect the ability of Ngāpuhi hapū to exercise their rangatiratanga in determining when and how they would settle their claims"--Publisher information.

The Ngatiwai Mandate Inquiry Report found the Crown breached the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi when it recognised the mandate of the Ngatiwai Trust Board to negotiate Treaty claims on behalf of iwi in October 2015. The report came after 10 claimant groups applied for an urgent inquiry into the Crown's recognition of that mandate. Urgency hearings were held at Whangarei's Toll Stadium in October last year and in Wellington in December. Claimant Mylie George of Ngatiwai ki Whangaruru said whanau welcomed the report.

"In 2012, tamariki Māori were five times more likely than their non-Māori counterparts to enter State care ... As a result of claims concerning these differences, the Waitangi Tribunal held hearings in 2020 and 2021 into the functioning and cultural orientation of the State care and protection system. The Tribunal's inquiry was focused on examining the reason for the disparity between the number of tamariki Māori and non-Māori children being taken into care, the extent to which changes introduced since 2017 would reduce the disparity, and whether additional changes might be required to secure outcomes with te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi and its principles"--Inside front cover.

As migration has not commonly been considered as part of the indigenous experience, the prevalent view of indigenous communities tends to portray them as static groups, deeply rooted in their territories and customs. Increasingly, however, indigenous peoples are leaving their long-held territories as part of the phenomenon of global migration beyond the customary seasonal and cultural movements of particular groups. Diverse examples of indigenous peoples' migration, its distinctive features and commonalities are highlighted throughout this report, and show that more research and data on this topic are necessary to better inform policies on migration and other phenomena that have an impact on indigenous people' lives.
