If 90 percent of parity at the beginning of the marketing year is higher, the support will be raised to that level. The International Wheat Agreement ends with the 1952-53 year and the question of extension will be considered in coming months, During the first 2 years of the Agreement, exports of wheat and flour have been maintained at a higher level than would have been possible in the absence of the Agreement or a similar export program. Excerpt from The Wheat Situation During the 192m 33 period, when world supplies were increasing, world prices were declining, reaching the low point as supplies reached the high.point. From the spring of 1933 to the summer of 1937, world prices moved steadily upward. Reflecting higher world commodity price levels, four successive below ayerage harvests in North America, and the short Southern Hemisphere crop. In 1936 - 37 wheat prices advanced sharply as a result of increased demand and the smallest supplies in recent years. Then, during the l937é38 selling season, wheat prices declined generally, with somewhat larger supplies, uncertain prospects for world business activity, and weakness in the general price level. Excerpt from The Wheat Situation, Vol. 141: Dec. 2, 1954 Even though the supply of wheat is the largest in our history, cash prices have advanced and in mid-november were generally at about the highest levels of the season to date having advanced in general 30 to 40 cents above the low points in June. The average price received by farmers in mid-october was the highest mid-october average since 1951. The strength in prices reflects the relatively small free supplies. The first estimate of Spring wheat production will not be made until June 10. About 575 million bushels of old wheat are expected to be on hand next July 1. Allowing for some imports, supplies for 1953-5h would be about million bushels, 2 percent more than the million estimated for 1952-53. Domestic disappearance for 1953-5h is estimated at 685 million bushels, slightly more than the 673 million estimated for 1952r53. Civilian and mili tary food use (including use by Territories of the United States) is expected to be about 500 million bushels, slightly more than in 1952-53. Excerpt from The Wheat Situation, Vol. 137: Feb. 26, 1954 Domestic disappearance of wheat for 1953-54 is expected to total about 690 million bushels, including about h95-500 million for food use (continental U. S. Civilian, territories, and military), 110-120 million for feed, and about 71 for seed. Preliminary estimates indicate that about 120 million bushels of wheat were exported in the first 7 months (july-january) of the current marketing year, compared with 189 million in the same period a year earlier. If this rate should be maintained through June, exports for the 1953-5h year would total about 205 million bushels. This would be substantially below the 317 million bushels ex ported ih 1952-53 and the 19h5-51 average of hl7 million bushels, but above the long-time (1920-52) average of about 190 million bushels. Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: April 1957 The winter wheat crop to be harvested in 1957 was forecast at 669 million bushels as of April 1. The first estimate of spring wheat production will be made June 10. If some increase in acreage over intentions is assumed for durum as a result of recent legislation, about average yields would pro duce a total spring wheat crop of about 190 million bushels. Adding the 669 million - bushel winter crop, total production would amount to about 860 mil lion bushels. Imports are likely to be about the same as the 5 million estimated for 1956-57. With total disappearance of possibly 950 million bushels, consisting of 600 million for domestic use and possible exports of 350 million, a further reduction of around 85 million bushels in the carryover would occur at the end of the 1957 - 58 marketing year. Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: Including Rye There has been a marked improvement since last December in the condition of the United States winter wheat cr0p in the Southern Great Plains area, and a general improvement in practically all other areas of the country except in California, where the weather has been dry. The April 1 indicated crop of 549 million bushels, together with average yields on the prospective planted acreag of Spring wheat, would produce a total wheat cr0p of about 750 million bushels, or 180 million bushels smaller than last year. A crop this size would be 70 mi lion bushels above domestic disappearance during the period 1928-37. If the carry-over on July 1, 1939 is about 275 million bushels and production 1s as im oated above, the total domestic supply for 1939-40 would be million bushe about 60 million bushels smaller than the 1938-39 supply.
