Excerpt from The Evidence for the Papacy: As Derived From the Holy Scriptures and From Primitive Antiquity; With an Introductory Epistle This Work does not claim to be in any sense original: the only difference between it and others On the same subject, is its ar rangement, and perhaps its treatment. In investigating the Roman Claim, it appeared to me that it would be more satis factory to treat it as a strictly legal question, to be decided after perusing the evidence. The Church is a corporation, governed and administered according to the terms of its Charter, and in order that we may ascertain what these terms are, we must ex amine carefully the Patent of incorporation, and all the numerous documents that serve to throw light On the subject in question. Instead, therefore, Of writing a Treatise, I have preferred to adopt this method - that is, to prepare a case for consideration, and then to form a judgment upon the evidence adduced. Excerpt from A Debate on the Roman Catholic Religion To introduce the following report to the reader, we lay before him the correspondence of the parties, which immediately preceded the debate. Letter From Mr. Campbell Bishop Purcell - Respected Sir: At two o'clock this morning, after a tedious and perilous journey of ten days, I safely arrived in this city. The river having become innavigable in consequence of the ice, I was compelled to leave it and take to the woods, about two hundred miles above. By a zigzag course which carried me to Chillicothe and Columbus, sometimes on foot, sometimes on a sleigh, and finally by the mail stage, I accomplished a land tour of two hundred and forty miles, equal to the whole distance from Wheeling to Cincinnati. After this my travel's history, I proceed to state, that it was with pleasure I received either from you or some of my friends, a copy of the Daily Gazette, on the 22d ult. intimating your fixed purpose of meeting me in a public discussion of my propositions, or of the points at issue between Roman Catholics and Protestants. This, together with your former declarations in favor of full and free discussion, is not only in good keeping with the spirit of the age, and the genius of our institutions, but fully indicative of a becoming confidence and sincerity in your own cause. This frank and manly course, permit me to add, greatly heightens my esteem for you. Now, sir, that I am on the premises, I take the earliest opportunity of informing you of my arrival, and of requesting you to name the time and place in which it may be most convenient for you to meet me for the purpose of arranging the preliminaries. Excerpt from The Difficulties of Romanism in Respect to Evidence: Or the Peculiarities of the Latin Church Evinced to Be Untenable on the Principles of Legitimate Historical Testimony To argue with an opponent may evince a wish to satisfy that Opponent: but, on the part of the individual who enters into the argument, it can scarcely be construed to imply a doubt of the truth of his own opinions. Excerpt from Was the Apostle Peter Ever at Rome?: A Critical Examination of the Evidence and Arguments Presented on Both Sides of the Question There has not been given much attention by the good people of the United States to the arguments by which the doctrines and practices of the Church of Rome have been assailed from the one side and defended from the other. The reasons for this are not discreditable to a young Nation busily engaged in shaping its own life, and satisfied that religious convictions are a man's own affair and need not be discussed by his neighbors. There is, however, an increasing attention being given to History, and the element of Religion cannot be ruled out of historical investigation. It is, moreover, being shown to thoughtful students of the questions of the day, that there are such religious convictions as do affect others than those who hold them, and that they become a factor in social and political life. We rejoice in freedom, but we must scrutinize forces, even though religious, that appear to be opposed to accepted ideas of human freedom. Excerpt from Decay of the Church of Rome Is the Church of Rome gaining or losing ground in the worn field of religious controversy? No other issue, perhaps, in the spiritual struggle of our time attracts a wider interest, yet is concealed from the inquirer by a more perplexing tangle of contradictory statements, than this. To many the Church of Rome seems to silence all question by its display of vitality. Growing outward from the most fascinating city in the world, sending its roots deep into the life of the past 2000 years, spreading its branches to the outer limit of the five continents, it gives one an instinctive feeling of strength and endurance. It has survived the fiercest storms that have swept over Europe for many ages. Ancient Rome, at least in the days of Diocletian, employed its vast energy to tear it from its soil, yet in a century's time it looked down on the ruins of the Western Empire. It stood proudly out from the barbaric waves that rolled down from the north, and gathered from them greater force than ever. It flourished through the lethal degradation of the next five centuries, and drew fresh energy from the menacing revival of intellectual life.
