With The Wild Sonnets series, I have created my own take on the sonnet form - which maintains the structure and stricture of convention, while allowing a more fluid approach to both the rhythm and rhyme schemes. Essentially, a Wild Sonnet is two stanzas of seven lines each - composed of ambling iambics and capped with a rhyming couplet. As a writer, I admire and am deeply influenced by poets such as Shakespeare, Dylan Thomas, Emily Dickinson and others for whom the sounds of the language are as crucial to the poetic experience as the meanings of the words. As for the style in this collection - The Wild Sonnets are meant to be dramatic in nature, almost short soliloquies that seem to be an immediate, poetic response to some thought or comment that has just been introduced.

This collection presents first one hundred Wild Sonnets in the ongoing sequence by poet, dramatist and filmmaker, Nicholas Korn. While the poems in this series are not sonnets in the strict sense--they are fourteen lines of ambling iambic, most often pent up in a pentameter, but occasionally not. Divided into two stanzas of seven lines each, the only definitely placed rhymes are the couplets that cap lines 6 & 7 and 13 &14. The remaining rhymes, when they occur, are in turn, internal. As for the style--the wild sonnets are meant to be dramatic in nature, almost short soliloquies that seem to be an immediate, poetic response to some thought or comment that has just been spoken or introduced. If they are reminiscent of the Renaissance, it would be of the stage more than the pages of Sidney or Spenser. - 38 - Amid the mad immediate I sing, Whether it be in omen of what's yet To come, or amen for all that has. Are we not in the eye of wonder, Whether in the glinting rain or sheen Of snow, in recollection's echo, or the ache That after triumph takes not long to overtake? Time touches us but briefly, like the strings Of some strange instrument, fashioned To be played by everything, but timbred, grained And shaped in chords and colors of our own. Subtle in song, ensemble and solo both-- Whatever melody and the moment bring Will I to the havoc of heaven's hearing sing.

The Wild Sonnet format follows the traditional length of fourteen lines, but divides the poem into two stanzas of seven lines, each closing with a rhyming couplet. The five preceding lines are a rambling iambic, sometimes pent up in a pentameter and sometimes not. Occasionally, there are internal rhymes to give the work an echo both to the tradition of the form and to the thoughts within poem. The feeling of each Wild Sonnet is meant to sound something like a soliloquy - as if it were an utterance coming just after a striking thought or situation. There is a stream-of-conscious sense to the flow of each stanza, a fretwork of association that circles back upon itself. The transition from the first to second stanza is meant to be bit of a break, a moving forward from the initial idea in an unexpected direction. The structure and sensibility of The Wild Sonnets are influenced by great poets of the past, most notably: William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Dylan Thomas, e.e. cummings, Gerard Manley Hopkins and John Donne.
