Excerpt from The Wild White Man and the Blacks of Victoria This decision appears the more necessary, because of the course taken by a gentleman who, several years ago, published What he called an Autobiography Of William Buckley, to the authenticity of which there are many grave objections; while, at the same time, the statements respecting the Port Phillip Blacks are very incorrect, as this gentleman was personally unacquainted with them. All whom we have consulted, and who knew Buckley both in Port Phillip and in Hobart Town, agree in saying that the man was so dull and reserved that it was impossible to get any connected or reliable information from him. Excerpt from William Buckley, the Wild White Man and His Port Phillip Black Friends The object of the present work is rather to present the Blacks as they were than as they are. For this purpose, documents of an ancient colonial date have been consulted, and the experience of the first settlers has been related. The Author has to express his deep sense of obligation to the kindness and public spirit of Mr. John Helder Wedge of Tasmania, Mr. McMillan of Gipps Land, Dr. Thomson of Geelong, and other esteemed fellow colonists, for their valuable information. The floating tales of the early days, unless now collected, will soon be forgotten, or lapse into fabled traditions. The Author has been the fortunate means of preserving some interesting reminiscences of the primitive days of Port Phillip, and the savage state of the Aborigines. Having been equally successful in obtaining reliable accounts of the poor Tasmanians, he hopes to lay their sad story before the Australian Public. It is fitting that our youth be acquainted with the annals of their own homes, and that their sympathies be excited for the race that dwelt in the land before them. ‘Flannery has done us a service first by reissuing the story of a fascinating adventure from 200 years ago, and then by setting these events in perspective with his lucid introduction.’ Canberra Times ‘At 2.00 pm on Sunday, 6 July 1835, a giant of a man shambled into the camp left by John Batman at Indented Head near Geelong...’ In 1803 the convict William Buckley, a former soldier, escaped from the first official settlement in Victoria, near Sorrento on Port Phillip Bay. For three decades the ‘wild white man’ lived with Aborigines around the bay, before giving himself up in 1835. First published in 1852, The Life and Adventures of William Buckley is the ultimate survival story of early Australia and provides an extraordinary insight into pre-contact indigenous society. Tim Flannery has published over thirty books, including the award-winning The Future Eaters, The Weather Makers and Here on Earth and the novel The Mystery of the Venus Island Fetish. In 2005 he was named Australian Humanist of the Year and in 2007 Australian of the Year. In 2007 he co-founded and was appointed Chair of the Copenhagen Climate Council. In 2011 he became Australia’s Chief Climate Commissioner, and in 2013 he founded the Australian Climate Council. ‘This account, in Buckley’s words...has all the elements of a Boy’s Own yarn: convicts, savages, privations, wars, cannibalism, survival, treachery and the founding of a colony.’ Herald Sun

Making The White Man S West written by Jason E. Pierce and has been published by University Press of Colorado this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-15 with History categories.

The West, especially the Intermountain states, ranks among the whitest places in America, but this fact obscures the more complicated history of racial diversity in the region. In Making the White Man’s West, author Jason E. Pierce argues that since the time of the Louisiana Purchase, the American West has been a racially contested space. Using a nuanced theory of historical “whiteness,” he examines why and how Anglo-Americans dominated the region for a 120-year period. In the early nineteenth century, critics like Zebulon Pike and Washington Irving viewed the West as a “dumping ground” for free blacks and Native Americans, a place where they could be segregated from the white communities east of the Mississippi River. But as immigrant populations and industrialization took hold in the East, white Americans began to view the West as a “refuge for real whites.” The West had the most diverse population in the nation with substantial numbers of American Indians, Hispanics, and Asians, but Anglo-Americans could control these mostly disenfranchised peoples and enjoy the privileges of power while celebrating their presence as providing a unique regional character. From this came the belief in a White Man’s West, a place ideally suited for “real” Americans in the face of changing world. The first comprehensive study to examine the construction of white racial identity in the West, Making the White Man’s West shows how these two visions of the West—as a racially diverse holding cell and a white refuge—shaped the history of the region and influenced a variety of contemporary social issues in the West today.
