A window provides access to two of life’s essentials, light and air, but it is more than just a means to an end. Windows also have symbolic, expressive and architectural qualities that have for centuries inspired some of the world’s greatest artists. In this engaging new study, Christopher Masters celebrates the multiple roles of the window in art through five key themes, from the window as a status symbol to its use as a provider of physical and spiritual illumination; from its employment as a literal window on the world outside the confines of a room to its function as a mirror, reflecting the emotions of the artist or the individuals depicted; and finally to the immense architectural variety of windows that animate interior and exterior scenes throughout Western painting. With superb reproductions of 90 works by major artists from Giotto to Banksy, and spirited analysis of the paintings’ meanings, this is a remarkable exploration of an important but hitherto neglected subject in art history.

Leon Battista Alberti's 1435 treatise De pictura influenced generations of painters by suggesting that a painting should be approached as an open window. By the twentieth century, the window had transformed into a motif that would test the limits of painting. With his 1920 "Fresh Widow"--a replica of a French window with panes covered in black leather--Marcel Duchamp postulated a farewell to illusionist painting. This publication presents the development of window painting by artists such as Robert Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, Ren Magritte, Ellsworth Kelly, Eva Hesse, Gerhard Richter and many others.

"Formulated in 1434 by Leon Battista Alberti, the notion that a painting is like an open window influenced generations of painters. At the start of the twentieth century, the window, reduced to its framework, was employed as a motif and a symbol in order to test the function of painting as a means of reproduction. To the degree that the window is empty, its painted depiction denies us a perspective of the world. With Fresh Widow, the replica of a French window whose panes are covered in black leather, Marcel Duchamp postulated a farewell from illusionist painting in 1920. At the same time, it marked a new beginning. This publication reflects on the development of window painting in art through essays and monographic texts on artists such as Robert Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, Ellsworth Kelly, Eva Hesse, Gerhard Richter, Günther Förg, and others."--Publisher's website.

Photographers have been irresistibly drawn to the window as a powerful source of inspiration throughout the history of the medium. As one of the first camera subjects, the window is literally and figuratively linked to the photographic process itself. By bringing together key works, arranged thematically rather than chronologically, and presenting pairings within broader stylistic movements, this volume examines the motif of the window as a symbol of photographic vision. The Window in Photographs includes more than eighty color plates spanning the history of photography, all drawn from the J. Paul Getty Museum’s permanent collection. The theme is presented in a wide range of contexts, from one of the earliest images by William Henry Fox Talbot or Julia Margaret Cameron’s 1864 allegorical use of the motif, to works by members of the Photo-Secession, including Gertrude Käsebier and Fred Holland Day. The documentary thread of the street photographer can be followed in Eugène Atget’s record of the old quartiers of Paris and later twentieth-century photographs by William Eggleston, Walker Evans, and Lee Friedlander. Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand chose to utilize the theme of the window for its more graphic possibilities. More recently, photographers Shizuka Yokomizo and Gregory Crewdson explored conceptual aspects of the window to investigate themes of voyeurism and invented narrative, while Uta Barth and Yuki Onodera created more abstract visions.
