And then, that fresh young Williams called her The Tangle-foot Kid - and you know how a name like that gets about. The name applied mostly to her propensity for getting stuck; as for actual foot-work, she was about average. Excerpt from The Winner But now, in spite of his thirty years, he was like a boy let loose from school, with the sap running in his veins and a new interest in life and the things that make it up, surging within him. He could not remember when he had last looked at a woman with other than eyes that were preoccupied and mind that was ab sent and detached. It was so long ago that the sensation he now felt was entirely unfa miliar to him. Its very pleasure was strange and disturbing. Excerpt from A Hand in the Game A viciously thrown snowball missed the target which it was hurled by my reckless hand, and struck one that was chosen by me fate. A pair of red lips, sweet and tender and beautiful, and my cruel little missile, mischievously flung in wanton carelessness, came into conjunction like the stars in a plotted horoscope, foretelling a strange new fortune for me. She was slender and small and dark and lovely as the loveliest red rose that ever opened its flushed petals to the day. I was a great, blundering young giant with more strength than sense, more pugnacity than judgment, more hair-brained recklessness than sober experience. It was April - yes, April with snow - and spring was in the air after one parting norther had trailed a white wake across the wide flat countryside. She was at home in the little suburban village where the train that carried me cityward had been stopped by the mere accident of a freight-spill - though I call it by a different name now. Excerpt from Bridge That Wins Bridge originated in Constantinople about 1870, and has become probably the most popular of all indoor games. The game is played by four players, the full pack of cards being used and the cards taking rank as in Whist. The players must cut for the deal and the player cutting the lowest card wins, the ace being the lowest. The dealer must-either declare the trump or request his partner to do so. If the make is passed the trump must be named by the partner. Thirty points constitute a game, but all points over thirty in a game are counted. Two games won out of three constitute a rubber, and the win ners of a rubber add 100 points to their score. In addition to the points scored for game and rubber there is an honor score, which is kept separately. At the conclusion of a rubber, to ar rive at the result, the sum total of the points and honors scored by losers is deducted from the sum total of the points and honors scored by the winners.
