The originality of the Johannine presentation of the gospel has long been recognized by commentators and has been the subject of endless research and discussion. It is indeed impossible for any one man to master all the literature on the subject. The originality of the Johannine presentation of the gospel has long been recognized by commentators and has been the subject of endless research and discussion. It is indeed impossible for any one man to master all the literature on the subject. The discussion has ranged over a wide spectrum of problems, such as the date and authenticity of the gospel, its sources, literary unity, and historical value, its dependence on or independence from the synoptic gospels, the influence of the Hellenistic world on the author's thought, his Jewish background, and his own purpose ans personal contribution to the presentation of Jesus in the gospel. All this study has not been fruitless, so that one is justified in speaking of a new look in Johannine studies today, even among Catholic commentators. Since the publication of the John Rylands Papyrus 457 and more so since the discovery of the Qumran Literature, no one today hesitates about dating the gospel towards the close of the first century A.D. at the latest. The exact identity of the author is not as burning a question today as it was fifty years ago. On the one hand, literary authorship by John the son of Zebedee is no longer insisted upon even by Catholic authors.

Paul writes, "For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Cor. 1:18, NASU). The "word of the cross" is the unveiled story of the Gospel, our salvation. It speaks of God's purpose in the cross, the power of the cross, even the plan and mystery of the cross. The cross is seen as either Foolishness or Power- foolishness by those who are perishing, those who have ignored God their entire life and yet think that they will, one day, live in His heaven. Whereas, to those who are being saved, the cross is the very power of God! The Word of the Cross is a study of the Gospel, the good news of reconciliation with God. We begin by seeking to understand the question "Why the cross?" We observe as God builds a bridge of trust by demonstrating his own faithfulness through the generations, giving us signs and tokens of remembrance of his grace. We will see that the cost of our sin debt is beyond our reach, that only God could provide a means to cover it. We will look upon the paschal lamb--Jesus Christ--as the only solution to that debt. We will come face-to-face with the cross and observe as our sin debt is paid. Finally, we will look beyond the cross to understand what this means for us, even now. The word of the cross is life, life eternal.

The Word Of The Cross written by Jonathan A Linebaugh and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-31 with categories.

This collection of Jonathan Linebaugh's most important work on Paul explores the merciful surprise at the heart of Paul's gospel: a grace that, while strange and weak in worldly terms, is nothing less than the power of God, full of comfort and promise. Through twelve essays--two of them new--Linebaugh contextualizes and interprets key Pauline passages, does comparative readings of Paul in conversation with early Jewish texts, and enters into dialogue with Reformation theologians such as Martin Luther and Thomas Cranmer. Thorough and multifaceted, Linebaugh's work is at once exegetical, historical, and theological in scope. Accordingly, The Word of the Cross is a rigorous scholarly enterprise that takes seriously Paul's claim that the good news of Jesus Christ, despite appearing scandalous and foolish, in fact contradicts and overcomes the conditions of the possible through the power of God.

For at least a century, at special three-hour services on Good Friday, it has been the custom in many churches to reflect on the Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross. In this tradition, Fleming Rutledge here presents seven eloquent meditations on these final sayings of Jesus. Rutledge links the sayings from the cross with contemporary events and concerns, but also incorporates recent biblical scholarship and modern questions about the death of Christ, particularly in light of Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ. Rutledge shows how each word or saying from the Cross affords an opportunity for readers to gain a deeper understanding of the horrific death suffered by Jesus. Intending for this book to lead readers into a genuine devotional experience, Rutledge has made every effort to evoke and preserve the contemplative atmosphere of the three-hour Good Friday memorial. The book includes frequent references to hymns associated with this special day, and each meditation ends with an appropriate hymn text for personal prayer and reflection.

Down through the years many books have been written to help us plumb the depth of sin, to help us understand the significance of Calvary. Today there is a dearth of writings about the cross and particularly about the seven times that Jesus spoke from the cross. These utterances of Christ are known as the Òseven last words of JesusÓ or Òthe seven words of the cross.Ó Yet, in a most striking way, the words of Jesus from the cross tell us the essential meaning of Christ's coming and death. This book on Christ's words from the cross is shared with the deep desire that readers may see, not only the centrality of the cross for salvation, but also the centrality of the cross in enabling us to live the Christ life. These messages were written to help the reader identify with the cross for salvation. But they do not stop there. They also insist on an identification with the cross to the point that we die to the old life and walk in a newness of life.
