Ibn Babawayh – also known as al-Shaykh al-Saduq – was a prominent Twelver Shi'i scholar of hadith. Writing within the first century after the vanishing of the twelfth imam, al-Saduq represents a pivotal moment in Twelver hadith literature, as this Shi'i community adjusted to a world without a visible imam and guide, a world wherein the imams could only be accessed through the text of their remembered words and deeds. George Warner's study of al-Saduq's work examines the formation of Shi'i hadith literature in light of these unique dynamics, as well as giving a portrait of an important but little-studied early Twelver thinker. Though almost all of al-Saduq's writings are collections of hadith, Warner's approach pays careful attention to how these texts are selected and presented to explore what they can reveal about their compiler, offering insight into al-Saduq's ideas and suggesting new possibilities for the wider study of hadith.

"Ibn Babawayh - also known by his honorific title of al-Shaykh al-Saduk - was an Imami Shiʻi scholar of the early Buwayhid period. He is best known as a major hadith scholar, being the author of Man la yahduruhu al-Faqih , one of the four canonical books of Shi'ite Islam. Despite his importance, al-Saduq has received little scholarly attention. Neither is there any book length study on Shi'i hadith literature, the discipline being overwhelmingly dominated by studies of Sunni hadith . George Warner's book fill this gap. It is a study of al-Saduq - one of the foundational figures of Twelver Shiʻism, a scholar of the hadith, a member of the Buwayhid court and a writer or great skill and ingenuity - and it sheds light on the richness of the later Abbasid religious and intellectual culture."--

Masoud Emami's The Shī'a Imams in the Words of Preeminent Sunni Scholarship is a meticulously researched thesis that collects testimonials from such sources as the sahihayn of Bokhārī and Moslem, and the tafsīrs and histories of such Sunnī luminaries as Tabarī and Eben Sa'd and other Sunni scholars (including Ibn Taymīya!), all of whom attest to the lofty character and spiritual station of the twelve Shi'a Imams. Emami's thesis begins by laying the theoretical foundations of the use of such evidence in deriving his proof of the rightfulness of the Imams' claims to the imamate of the community. Emami has painstakingly combed through and scrupulously examined a vast corpus of Sunni sources, and has provided numerous testimonials from modern as well as ancient Sunni scholars for each of the Imams in turn, including acclaim from the Associates (sahabah) and Followers (tabe'en). The incredibly high praise lavished by preeminent Sunni scholarship on the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt unearthed by Emami proves that love of and respect for the Imams is indeed the common ground that binds the Sunni and Shi'a branches of Islam. The prospective Sunni or Shi'a reader will be left with a more exalted view of the Imams after reading this fascinating collection of authentic and authoritative historical reports.

This book is a treatment of Shi'a Islam from an emic or inside perspective of Shi'a Islam itself, as opposed to the perspective of orientalism, or of comparative religion, or sociology or some other branch of the humanities with their modern Western perspectives, all of which are philosophical approaches (in the sense that they have philosophical rather than religious underpinnings) and therefore do not, strictly speaking, deal with the religion itself as it is understood by the clerisy of its practitioners, but do so from a perspective and ideological framework that is alien and indeed antithetical and at times hostile to it. There is a severe dearth of source material which the English-speaking reader can rely on to provide him or her with the proper understanding of Shi'a Islam based on the self-understanding of the religion itself. The Doctrinal Series (as well as other series) of the Lion of Najaf Publications hopes to do its part in filling the lacunae that exist, thereby firstly providing Moslems who have emigrated to or have been born outside of the Islamic heartland with reliable material for them to gain a better understanding of their religion; and secondly, to provide non-Moslems who are interested in learning more about Islam, and about Shi'a Islam in particular, with first-hand and dependable resources which are sourced from the heart of Islamic civilization. Mas'ud Emami's What Prominent Sonni Scholars have said about the Imams of the Shi'a, is, as the subtitle states, a new case for the rightfulness of the claim to leadership of the twelve imams of the Shi'a, based on the application of evidentialism exclusively to Sonni sources for proofs of the rightfulness of their claims to the imamate. Sonni sources have been scrupulously examined and copious hadith proofs have been provided for each of the Imams in turn from such sources as the sahihayn of Bokhari and Moslem, and the tafsirs and histories of such Sonni luminaries as Tabari and Eben Sa'd.

A question commonly posed in different circles is: if we all refer to the same sacred texts of the Quran and Sunnah for guidance, why are there so many differences between the schools of Islamic law (madhahib)? In other words, why did the great jurists (fuqaha) of Islam such as the four main Imams and their students differ in their opinions and rulings? This work attempts to answer this very question, focusing on one aspect, namely: how different understandings of the hadith literature influenced and shaped these differences in opinion. In addition, the author responds to some of the misgivings and objections which some people levy against these distinguished luminaries of Islam. This valuable work is a must-read for students of hadith and fiqh, as well as anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of the differences that occur between the various schools of Islamic law. It will alert the reader to the expertise of the jurist Imams and the effort they exerted in deriving rulings from the Quran and Sunnah. It will also create in him a state of serenity and trust towards the Imams and their schools of law, which are followed by the vast majority of the Muslim Ummah.

The Divine Guide In Early Shi Ism written by Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-22 with Religion categories.

The Imam, the Divine Guide, is the central point around which the Shi'ite religion turns. The power of Shi'ism comes from the actions of the Imam. This title is reserved exclusively for the sucessors of the prophets in their mission. The author shows that from the beginning of Shi'ite Islam until the tenth century, the Imam was primarily a master of knowledge with supernatural powers, not a jurist theologian. The Imam is the threshold through which God and the creatures communicate. He is thus a cosmic necessity, the key and the center of the universal economy of the sacred. The author presents Shi'ism as a religion founded on double dimensions where the role of the leader remains constantly central: perpetual initiation into divine secrets and continued confrontation with anti-initiation forces. Without esotericism, exotericism loses its meaning. Early Imamism is an esoteric doctrine. Historically, then, at the beginning of esotericism in Islam, we find an initiatory, mystical, and occultist doctrine. This is the first book to systematically explore the immense literature attributed to the Imams themselves in order to recover the authentic original vision. It restores an essential source of esotericism in the world of Islam.

Imams And Emirs written by Fuad I. Khuri and has been published by Saqi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-01 with Religion categories.

In this classic, comprehensive study of Islamic sects in the contemporary Arab world, Khuri focuses on the Sunni, Shi'a, Alawis, Druze, Ibadis, Zaidis, Yazidis and the Maronites (who, although Christian, are included because they share certain distinguishing features). His placements of these groups on a single comparative scale was unprecedented. Khuri argues that conflicts among Muslims arise from the struggle between two opposing forces: religious, doctrinaire authorities (imams) and leaders who derive their authority from power and coercion (emirs). He discusses the role of dogma but also, uniquely, the critical factors that differentiate sects from religious communities and religions from sects. Following a thorough review of the structural characteristi of individual sects, Khuri addresses issues of religious change, dealing with the interplay between religions, states and nationalism. Here he explores the contradictions between modern state structures and the Islamic umma, showing how some religious concepts had begun to take on nationalistic meanings.
