The more general portion is preparatory and figurative the more special is then drawn out in detail and in plain expressions. The former sets out with the paradoxical and awakening testimony There is a water of life! And this is the true gift of God through Me 1 We must observe here the point of connection, and the transition. The connection is with the present, earthly gift of God, the water which supplies the figure. Ver. 7. (first turning - point - the woman becomes attentive to the speaker, and enters into conversation with Him.) Then follows the transition to the true or spiritual gift of God the same in its source, contrasted in its worth not without allusion to the end of the whole colloquy He Himself who was speaking 1 (second turning-point: the woman does not under stand, and opposes.) Then follows a plain designation, though as yet in figurative, preparatory words, of the spiritual gift; and its worth is shown in relation to the permanence of its satisfac tion, vers. 13, 14. There is first another antithesis - He who drinketh this water shall never thirst: then comes the plain declaration - Springing up into everlasting life! (third turning point: the woman begins to understand, but her notion being obscure, she can only speak evasively.) The question may be asked, why I have not rather retrenched and curtailed it; and my reply is, that I did not think myself justified in dealing thus with a book which already belongs to the public, and has been blessed to the public good: - that the words of the Passion and the Resurrection demand the most careful and elaborate treatment, being of all our Lord's discourses the most weighty, the most profound, and the most unlimited in their consequences; - and, moreover, that they involve more than ordinary exposition of the historical narrative with which they are so wonderfully interwoven. As to the most diffuse of the treatises contained in these volumes - those on Baptism and the Lord's Supper - the necess1ty of our own times has required that they should be rather enlarged than compressed. May the Lord Open for this exposition of His word, based upon a penetrating contemplation of His life, a still more ex tended path Of usefulness and blessing! Excerpt from The Words of the Lord Jesus, Vol. 2 St Matthew in the most literal and decisive manner intimates that this longer discourse was spoken in its integrity on one distinctive occasion: let ch. x. 1, 5, be compared with ch. xi. 1. All, therefore, that has already been said in connection with the Sermon on the Mount, may also be used here in refutation of that wilful opinion which imputes to the Evangelist an elaboration into one discourse of many sayings uttered at many various times. This opinion is grounded strangely enough upon opposite reasons: sometimes upon the lack of connection in the whole, and sometimes, on the contrary, on its far-reaching comprehensiveness, which too perfectly embraces all futurity to be consistent with the occasion of its utterance. This latter acknowledgment and supposition is, assuredly, the only true one: but the conclusion drawn from it is on that account all the more false. He who is capable of discerning in this chapter a collection of loosely-bound and inharmonious fragments, has not yet understood it aright, as our exposition, it is hoped, will show. But he who shall be capable of feeling and marking the deep-founded unity of the discourse, which proceeds in its organic structure from the immediate present to the most distant futurity, from the concrete contemplation of relations near at hand to the widest view of all relations, must also and necessarily be driven to the conclusion that only the Lord Himself could have constructed and given us such a whole. Excerpt from The Words of the Lord Jesus, Vol. 4: Translated From the Second Revised and Enlarged German Edition We have already, in Vol. ii., given our opinion upon the harmonistic relation of the entire section, ch. xi. 17-36, to Matt. xii. 25-45; expressing upon this latter passage our conviction that they record one and the same discourse, founded upon one and the same incident - whether the point of time, not definitely marked in either of the three Evangelists, be determined by St Matthew or by St Luke. Adhering, however, to our firm principle, we give the preference to St Matthew's arrangement of our Lord's discourses; when, therefore, St Luke interrupts the general discourse, in vers. 27, 28, by an interjected word, the conclusion of which he had already given us before, we must necessarily assume that this apostrophe of the woman, and our Lord's answer, had occurred in the meantime. But, whether in the midst of the discourse itself (St Matthew's extract gives us no appropiate point of connection for it) or at its close, parallel with what is related in Matt. xii. 46-50, Mar. iii. 31-35, and what St Luke himself has already recorded inch. viii. 19-21 - who shall determine? We manifestly see that the otherwise so well-informed Luke is indistinct in the chronology of these things generally. The perpetual conflict of my exegesis with that Of the predominant school has given me abundant incentive thoroughly to test my fundamental principles, in order to find out what might be wanting to their unity and consistency; but the most conscientious revision of the work for this second edi tion has detected nothing in them fundamentally contradictory. On the contrary, I have become more livingly conscious of the internal truth and harmony of my views while only in a few places it has seemed prudent to render the expression a little plainer, and less open to misunderstanding. Would that the critic above-named had pointed out to me what those contradic tions are, with the same diffuseness which he has expended upon individual questions of exegesis! I seek that information in vain throughout his Review, and am therefore referred to the orthodox theology of the Universities, which his criticism rests upon as a presupposed and unquestioned foundation.
