Excerpt from The Teacher and His Work This book is the outgrowth of almost a lifetime of school work in nearly every grade of schools, from the district school in the country to the city superintendency. Much of the matter contained has done duty, in other forms, at teacher's institutes in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Illinois; and a considerable part has appeared in an educational magazine. The whole has been carefully revised - much of it rewritten. I have not been ambitious to make a large book, but rather to condense within moderate limits as much as possible of helpfulness and inspiration to those who are bearing the burden and heat of the day. Nor have I striven after novelty or display of learning, but I have striven to make simple and plain some of the most vital things in school education. The life of an earnest teacher is of necessity laborious and pains-taking, but it has its compensations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Evolution of a Teacher Thrs book is itself an evolution, beginning from the chance word of a friendly editor, Tell us how a teacher is made. That seed thought germinated, and in due time five sketches, covering as many decades of a teach er 's life, appeared in the Boston Evening Tran script. One of them caught the eye of a New York publisher who saw in the text the poten tial Scripture of a life. The writer's part has been to watch the seed grow and to let in upon it the soft airs of memory and the dews of life's afternoon. If new and then she suf fered her fancy to tamper with facts, instantly she was aware of a tinsel ornament fastened to her little plant. Excerpt from The Status of the Teacher The status of the teacher - the relation of the teacher to the community, to the school, to the pupils, to the parents of the pupils - this is the subject of frequent, and sometimes serious, misconception on the part of all concerned. This misconception is based upon a corresponding lack of understanding of the school itself. A very few instances serve to illustrate the varying phases of the misunderstanding. It is illustrated by the citizen who rebels against the payment of his school-tax. It is illustrated by the parent who says to the teacher: "I pay taxes; you are my employee; you must promote my child because I tell you to." It is illustrated by the teacher who reports to the parent with an air of personal injury: "Your boy annoys me very much in the classroom." It is illustrated by the principal who permits an unlicensed person to substitute in a class, provided he is willing to "take the chance" that he will get his pay. The following pages attempt to explain each relation of the teacher in its true light. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Primary Work: A Manual for Young Teachers This little book has been written for young Primary teachers, those just entering upon the work of teaching. For them only is it intended. The aim has not been so much to present anything new, as to make the experiences of the older teachers available for the younger ones. If in any small way this purpose is attained, if one teacher is helped even a little, the writer will have had her reward. Apology must be made for the overlapping of the chapters. The one subject, "language work," would include all, for "every lesson may be a language lesson." The divisions, however, were made for convenience. The methods given are not "cut and dried," but are intended to be only suggestive. And, after all, methods count for very little compared with the presence of the living teacher in the schoolroom. It may be necessary to teach many things and in many ways, but what we are will teach over our heads, and nothing acquired will stand our pupils in such stead upon the battlefield of life as the memory of a pure, sincere life once lived in their midst. Excerpt from The Evolution of the Teacher This volume represents an attempt to interpret some of the basic principles of pedagogy in terms of every-day school-room experience. To this end, many concrete illustrations are used by way of clarifying and reinforcing these principles. These illustrations have been gleaned from schools of all grades - from the kindergarten to the university. To the many teachers who, consciously or unconsciously, have made contributions to this illustrative material, and to the many others who have made helpful suggestions, the author acknowledges, with gratitude, his indebtedness. If the teachers who read this book find in it suggestions that will help them in their efforts toward a wider professional horizon and a larger measure of service to all those whom they teach, the author's purpose will have been realized. Excerpt from The Teacher The influences that have obtained in recruiting the vast army of teachers are infinite in variety. Some have taken up the work with definite purpose, some are teachers by acci dent A large number, especially among the women, have drifted into the ranks with no very definite idea as to how or why they are there or how long they may remain. But no matter whence these teachers come, no matter why, they should, being committed to the profession, consider carefully What it has to offer either as an occupation for a few years or for a life work. To the man, the situation pre sents one problem; to the woman, a different one entirely. There was a time when teaching offered to the young man a natural stepping-stone to a Wider or, at least, a different career. If he expected eventually to be a min ister, doctor, lawyer, or a business man, two or three years in the school-room was considered excellent preparation, and not a waste of time. Today it is necessary 'for a young man to select his chosen profession early and to enter upon it as soon as possible. All time spent in any other direction is deemed worse than thrown away. Competition is too great to admit of any but the direct road. This condition of affairs cuts off from the number of school men many naturally brilliant and well equipped, who, in former times, did excellent work in the school-room for short periods. Now and then today there is a young man who still finds teaching the first open door to Wider activity and broader culture. He teaches a year or two, saves a little money, growing a little bigger each month, until he sees other and more profitable opportunity for his increasing powers opening before him. This young man does not have much knowledge of pedagogy, often has no experience at all, but he brings something vital, virile, to the school-room which more than balances lack in technical requirements. What he brings counts for more than normal school train ing, a teacher's diploma from college, or than a head full of books on psychology, pedagogy, child study, and meth ods of discipline, good as they may be in their place. Excerpt from The Making of an American School-Teacher A few words only are needed to introduce this little book. If it has any quality of helpfulness, it will Speak for itself better than any preface could do. It was first published serially in the Saturday Evening Post and merits, it is believed, a more permanent form, especially as it touches upon problems of Public School Administration that are of universal concern. Excerpt from Fifty Years a Teacher The chapters which make up this sketch were written at request of the editor for The School Bulletin, and attracted so wide and so favorable attention that by consent of the author they are republished in this form. Few New York teachers have had so long, so varied, so creditable, and so influential a career as Mr. Whitney, and it is felt that this record of his services is of value not only to his friends as a personal remembrance, but to the public as giving glimpses of the educational history of New York during the past half century.
