Excerpt from The Works of the Emperor Julian, and Some Pieces of the Sophist Libanius, Vol. 2 of 2: Translated From the Greek Of the Epil'tles of Julian, the nine firft were printed in Greek, with other Epiflles by various hands, by Aldus, Rom. 1499, 4to. And afterwards in Greek and Latin, at Geneva, 1606, folio. The xth was preferved by Socrates in his Hifiory, III. 3. The Xith, and thofe that follow, as far as the xlviith, were in like manner publiihed among the Epiftlesof various writers. The xmxth was taken from Sozomen, v. 16. The Lth, Ltfl, and Lttd were fitii publifhed in Greek by Peter Martinius, together with the Mif0pogon, and the other Epiftles, illufirated by a Latin tranllation, Paris, 1567 and 1583, 8vo. Petau there fore firll tran ated thofe three, and alfo the mud, and the followmg, as far as the Lvnth, which, together with the Epiille of Gallus to Julian, Bonaventure Vulcanius pub li ied at Leyden, 1597, Izmo. At the end of the Epillles and Problems of theophylaetus Simocatta. The Lvnrth and lixth, but doubtfully blended together, were firft publifhcd by Nicholas Rigalt, who alfo added a tran ation, at the end of his Fuzzy: Para tz'cum, Paris, xeot, 4to. But in the edition of Petau, by the advice of Rigalt himfelf, it was divided into two, both mutilated, the former no conclnlion, and the latter no beginning. At length the former was fupplied from a M3. By the learned and ingenious Lewis Anthony Muratori, in'liis Padua, 1709, 4to. The th and the two following were firft publifhed by Petau, from a copy of an old ms. Lent him by Patricius Junius. The lxiiid, which Martinius and Petau have given in Greek only. But very imperfeet and incorree't, Ezekiel Spanheim amended and fupplted from the ms. Of Allatius, and firft added a Latin verlion, Muratori has alfo publi ted three other Epifiles of julian, the tvth, vth, and ninth, from the fame ms. He was born in the city of Orleans, and honoured it by his nzerit. He was 3 mil genius, formed for literature, and rendered himfelf a prodigy of knowledge. For, befides the learned lan guages, vr hich he wrote and {poke with the greateft uency, there never was a divine more profound, an lriftorian better informed, an orator more eloquent, a critic morejudrcrous, a poet more ingenious and more owery. In ibort, of nothing in literature he was ignora'nt. His excellent works leave no room to doubt this truth. Father Petau entered among the Jefuits in the year r6105, which was the 22d of his age. He was profe 'or there of eloquence, and after wards of facred literature, and during the forty-eight years that he lived there ina molt exemplary and edrfyingmanner, he was the ornament of his fociety, the friend of all men of learning, the admiration of foreigners, and, in a word, one of the molt excellent geniufes in France in the xvrtth century. F. [petau died in the college of Clermont, at Paris, on the nth of December, 1652, aged 69.
