Grain is one of the world's most important staple commodities and one of the most hotly contested. With ever present malnutrition and starvation in many regions contrasting with huge agricultural surpluses in richer areas, it comes as no surprise that grain features highly in both human welfare and global trading issues. In the second edition of this book, Michael Atkin examines the political and economic dynamics of the international trade, explaining to the reader how the industry works and producing an understanding of the many ironies that are apparent in the trade of this vital commodity. This edition also takes into account a number of recent developments that have affected, or promise to affect, the grain trade such as the collapse of the USSR and the completion of the Uruguay Round at GATT. The book introduces the grain market to those who have not yet made its acquaintance and makes an excellent quick reference source for the better informed, providing a comprehensive insider's view of the trade. The international grain trade is an essential desk top reference to every aspect of the market for producers, traders, brokers, institutional investors and students.

Excerpt from International Trade in Bread and Coarse Grains: World Exports by Countries of Origin and Destination The world's annual export movement of bread and coarse grains from surplus to deficit producing countries has been an outstanding feature of international trade down through the centuries. The grains under reference are wheat, rye, corn, oats, barley and grain sorghums. Production for export has now reached such proportions that competition for export outlets is keener today than at any time in history. This bulletin reveals the actual levels of such competition during each of the five years ending with 1955-56 compared with the quantities moved into export channels in earlier years, running back to 1909-13. A large part of the human race depends on bread and coarse grains for the bulk of its food intake, consuming them either directly in the form of porridge, bread and other baked products and beverages, or indirectly in the form of livestock and meat products. While no one grain is used exclusively for one single purpose, wheat and rye are used mainly for human food and corn, oats, barley and grain sorghums mainly for feeding livestock. Approximately billion out of the billion acres of arable land in the world are devoted to the pro duction of bread and coarse grains. Production and marketing of these grains constitutes an important part of the agricultural economy of every country in the world. Every month of the year, in some farming area or another, a golden harvest of these grains is moving to market. Millions of farmers throughout the world depend upon them as the main source of their income. Yet there is no one country where production and consumption are so nicely balanced that the country con cerned does not either have to import or to export some of these grains. In fact, no single group of commodities plays a more important role in international political and economic relations generally. The share of the world's annual production moving into export channels ranges between 15 and 17 percent for wheat, around 10 percent for barley, and 3 percent for corn. For rye, oats and grain sorghums, the export share is less than 3 percent, these being largely stay-at-home crops.
