They say it's a small world. a small world. It isn't. Planet Earth is a big place and full of infinite variety. There are around 200 countries in the world, depending on how you count them. No one can ever visit them all, except for a few box-tickers. In this book we have tried to give you a brief overview of most of the world's countries and what makes them worth visiting. We actually rank 120 countries and look at dozens more (we didn't spell it out â a hundred sounds better). We have tried to paint a picture of each of them. It is not definitive. There are plenty of good sources of more detailed information, most of it free and online. The days of relying solely on a Frommers or a Lonely Planet guidebook are long gone.We believe what we have done is unique. We have taken ten different criteria for our 120 countries, found numeric ratings for them, and combined them into an overall score to rate and rank each country. We also rank them for each factor. The result is a useful guide to how easy and desirable these countries are to visit. It will help you decide where on earth to go next. The Top 100 Countries index uses the following criteria, all of them from independent and reputable international sources: 1.Popularity (number of tourists per year)2.Number of things to see and do3.Tourist friendliness4.Value for money5.Number of World Heritage Properties6.Safety and security7.Quality of the health system8.Quality of the environment9.Corruption level10.Personal and economic freedom The Top 100 Countries index does not cover things like excitement level, the tastiness of the local cuisine, or the ease or cost of travel to these destinations (which will vary according to your starting point). Nor does it look at a range of other subjective factors. Travel is the most personal of experiences, and individual tastes cannot be quantified. But we believe the ten factors we have chosen give a good indication of the relative merits of each country, based on the criteria that are important to most travelers. The rating methodology and sources are explained in Appendix 1, and Appendix 2 ranks every country by each criterion. The book does not cover countries in the order of preference, though there is an overview in Chapter 1. The main body of the book is structured according to the regions of the world, looking at most countries individually, even those that are not rated. It is intended as a guide to help you work out which countries you might visit. We look at the best things to see and do, and at each country's history and culture. The description of each country is accompanied by its detailed score in the Top 100 Countries rating, for each of the ten criteria, plus other things like the level of tourist infestation. The ratings help us see the pros and cons of each destination. Different people like different things, but by using this rating system we have tried to give an objective analysis of each country. For major destinations, like the USA, Europe's 'Big Five', China and Japan, we go into some detail, breaking our descriptions down by the regions of that country. Some places are mentioned only briefly, and most unrated countries are skimmed over â they are simply not very good places to go. But India, for example, gets a detailed listing, despite its low score, because it is so big and so interesting.

For fans of Jasmine Warga and Thanhhà Lại, this is a stunning novel in verse about a young Taiwanese immigrant to America who is confronted by the stark difference between dreams and reality. Anna can’t wait to move to the beautiful country—the Chinese name for America. Although she’s only ever known life in Taiwan, she can’t help but brag about the move to her family and friends. But the beautiful country isn’t anything like Anna pictured. Her family can only afford a cramped apartment, she’s bullied at school, and she struggles to understand a new language. On top of that, the restaurant that her parents poured their savings into is barely staying afloat. The version of America that Anna is experiencing is nothing like she imagined. How will she be able to make the beautiful country her home? This lyrical and heartfelt story, inspired by the author’s own experiences, is about resilience, courage, and the struggle to make a place for yourself in the world.

Every year, Italy swells with millions of tourists who infuse the economy with billions of dollars and almost outnumber Italians themselves. In fact, Italy has been a model tourist destination for longer than it has been a modern state. The Beautiful Country explores the enduring popularity of “destination Italy,” and its role in the development of the global mass tourism industry. Stephanie Malia Hom tracks the evolution of this particular touristic imaginary through texts, practices, and spaces, beginning with the guidebooks that frame Italy as an idealized land of leisure and finishing with destination Italy's replication around the world. Today, more tourists encounter Italy through places like Las Vegas's The Venetian Hotel and Casino or Dubai's Mercato shopping mall than experience the country in Italy itself. Using an interdisciplinary methodology that includes archival research, ethnographic fieldwork, literary criticism, and spatial analysis,The Beautiful Country reveals destination Italy's paramount role in the creation of modern mass tourism.

These days a lot of importance is given to clean and environment friendly nations by us. We all prefer to live, see, or just spend some of our time with these countries. After all, nature and mankind go hand in hand. Today, everybody wants to live and breathe in a clean environment. All of us do. Cleanliness and hygienic of a Country are a very good way of judging the discipline of that country and its people. With the advent of technology and the industrial revolution that has taken place recently, the natural beauty of this amazing world has altered to a significant degree. The environment of a country can translate the growth, current situation, quality and advancement of a country and also makes a good picture of the lifestyles of its inhabitants. If the atmosphere and surroundings of a country are polluted, dirt is in the skies, roads are muddy or unpaved, we tend to feel there is an urgent need of development for that place. So we say that the country itself is underdeveloped and its people need to contribute to the cleanliness and wellness of this society in a more meaningful way. Not only it casts an impression that is bad, societies with poor hygiene have to cope with diseases and viruses of many kinds. And it all results in the overall not-so-good image of that country. Having said that, there are still quite a few countries which are very neat and clean, hence setting up an example for the rest of the World. Here, we take a look at a list of The Top 10 Cleanest Countries of the World 2015. The following list is based on the environmental index of countries and the most desirable places to settle in.

With a foreward by Montek Singh Ahluwalia Beautiful Country is a journey towards understanding India. From the rarefied world of the Jalpaiguri tea estates to the crowded bylanes of Varanasi, from the pristine forests of Andamans to the seething valley of Manipur, from the scattered habitations of Ladakh to the flooded villages of Barmer - these are the roads less travelled. A woman and a girl set out to see India, lugging along the baggage of their pasts. On the way, they meet: Maimunisa, the ancillary weaver from Banaras who has only been able to feed her three-year-old son 'sabudane ka paani' (tapioca water); young doctors from AIIMS who have left behind hefty pay packages and the comfort of city life to provide health care to tribals in the hinterlands of Chhattisgarh; village women who have been able to significantly reduce the number of infant deaths in the tribal peripheries of Maharashtra. The duo chance upon the story of Bon Bibi and Shah Jangolee in the swamps of the Sundarbans, as also the natural, historical and cultural wonders that dot the Indian landscape. This book compels you to experience the hope and despair, misery and triumph, failures and innovations of 'real India' - an India that remains invisible to most Indians and does not make it to the front pages of newspapers, and has not been captured by the roving cameras of the 24x7 media channels.

A remarkable history of the two-centuries-old relationship between the United States and China, from the Revolutionary War to the present day From the clipper ships that ventured to Canton hauling cargos of American ginseng to swap Chinese tea, to the US warships facing off against China's growing navy in the South China Sea, from the Yankee missionaries who brought Christianity and education to China, to the Chinese who built the American West, the United States and China have always been dramatically intertwined. For more than two centuries, American and Chinese statesmen, merchants, missionaries, and adventurers, men and women, have profoundly influenced the fate of these nations. While we tend to think of America's ties with China as starting in 1972 with the visit of President Richard Nixon to China, the patterns—rapturous enchantment followed by angry disillusionment—were set in motion hundreds of years earlier. Drawing on personal letters, diaries, memoirs, government documents, and contemporary news reports, John Pomfret reconstructs the surprising, tragic, and marvelous ways Americans and Chinese have engaged with one another through the centuries. A fascinating and thrilling account, The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom is also an indispensable book for understanding the most important—and often the most perplexing—relationship between any two countries in the world.

In China she was the daughter of professors. In Brooklyn her family is 'illegal.' Qian is seven when she moves to America, the 'Beautiful Country', where she and her parents find that the roads of New York City are not paved with gold, but crushing fear and scarcity. Unable to speak English at first, Qian and her parents must work wherever they can to survive, all while she battles hunger and loneliness at school. Thus begins an extraordinary story that describes days labouring in sweatshops and sushi factories, nights scavenging the streets for furniture, and the terrifying moment when the family emerges from the shadows to seek emergency medical treatment for Qian's mother. Qian Julie Wang's memoir is an unforgettable account of what it means to live under the perpetual threat of deportation and the small joys and sheer determination that kept her family afloat in a new land. Told from a child's perspective, in a voice that is intimate, poignant and startlingly lyrical, Beautiful Country is the story of a girl who learns first to live - and then escape - an invisible life.
