Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry Is the future of poetry, as Matthew Arnold prophesied, immense For the answer to this very important question, we must turn to the past, - to man, his nature and his needs as there recorded. If the past answers that poetry has been of immense influence upon the life of man, we are warranted by the stability of the forces operative about us and within us, in asserting that poetry will continue to be of immense influence; indeed, we cannot, with any show of reason, come to a contrary conclusion. Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry, Vol. 1 of 10: Illustrated I do not wish, either, to confine the word use ful, ih its application, to our material needs. Everything we do ought to be useful, and so it is, if it is done well. Tables and chairs are useful; but so are pictures and cathedrals and lyrics and the theatre. If we allow ourselves onlv what are called the necessities of life, we are only keeping alive one-third of being; the other two-thirds of our manhood may be starving to death. The mind and the soul have their necessities, as well as the body. And we are to seek these things, not only for our future salvation, but for our salvation here and now, that our lives may be helpful and sane and happy. Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry, Vol. 4 of 10 Christmas Eve, we are caught up and carried onward by an unflinching and overcoming faith. Perhaps the most convincing arguments for re ligious reality in Browning's poems are those of An Epistle and of Cleon, where the cry of the human soul for the assurance which the Christian faith supplies is given such a penetrat ing voice. And there is no reasoning about the Incarnation, in any theological book that I have ever read, which seems to me so cogent as that great passage in Saul, where David cries. Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry, Vol. 10 of 10 In his introduction to Ward's admirable selec tions from The English Poets, Matthew Arnold - critic and poet - to whom allusion has already been made, says: The future of poetry is immense, because in poetry, where it is worthy of its high destinies, our race, as time goes on, will find an ever surer and surer stay. Excerpt from The World's Great Religious Poetry The most obvious facts about this collection of poetry are that it is not all great and that it makes strange combinations and sequences. It ranges from the Psalms of David and the Hymn of Cleanthes to the latest free verse. The great hymns that are translated from the Latin and the most radical of the twentieth century verse are alike only in that they show human feeling about the concept that is the foundation of all religion. Many poems that are far from being great belong here because they are significant. There are some persons who say that our age has no religion; others say it is more sincerely religious than any of the great ages of faith that are gone. 1the most intelligent thought of the present bases the authority of religion, not upon revelation, but upon the nature of man. Man's hunger for God is as funda mental and legitimate as his hunger for food and love. Our age may be lost as to what it should believe, but we were never so sure that we must and do believe. The good swimmer knows best how to trust the water; the best life is most reliant upon what some call the Integrity of the Universe and one of the greatest poets called the Everlasting Arms. The great poets have always spoken with authority. In them has the Word been made flesh. Now a war-weary world in search of faith turns to them. The Bible is an anthology of Hebrew literature-the Great Anthology. If no future poets ever rise to so great a height of constructive imagination as those of the classic Hebrew period it will always remain the Bible of the race. A cursory view of other religious poetry shows little that is not based upon the biblical poetry, but the spiritual assets of mankind have never been gathered together that we may see what they are. This book is a step in that direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Anthology of Recent Poetry The best poetry is always about the Earth itself and all the strange and lovely things that compose and inhabit it. When a 'great poet' sets himself the task of some 'big theme' he needs only to hold, as it were, a magnifying glass to the earth. We, who are born and live here, like very much to imagine other worlds, and we have even mentally constructed such another in which to exist after dying on this one; but we were careful to make it a glorified version of our own earth with everything we most love here intensified and improved to the utmost stretch of human imagination. To each man his 'best poetry' is that which he is able most to enjoy. The first object of poetry is to give pleasure. Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry of Home, of Friendship, Vol. 1: Introduction the Purpose of Poetry; Introductory Essay Young People and the Poets, Volumes 1 and 2; Love, Introductory Essay the Future of Poetry We must note two things about this step for ward 'which man has taken toward civilization in the first' place he had to have some leisure to do 'these things, 'and in the second place the objects he has made reveal his ingenuity and forethought. They are records of his life. And it 'will happen that, as his leisure increases, his implements will become more and more elaborate and ornate. 'every workman will have his own way of fashion ing them, using his Own 'device and designs, so that they will become something more than rude relics of one historic age or another: they will tell us something of'the artificer himself; they will em body 1s0me intentional expression of human life, 1and come to liave an art value. In so far as they can do this, they contain the essential quality of the fine arts. And the more freely the workman can deal with his craft, the more perfectly he can make it characteristic of himself, the greater will its artistic quality become. Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry, Vol. 9 of 10: Of Tragedy, of Humor; The Old Case of Poetry in a New Court The task of poetics, as yet almost untried, is to make clear the relations between higher and lower forms. Like war, marriage, worship, magic, per sonal adornment, and a dozen other institutions of this sort, poetry is an element in human life which seems to go back to the beginnings of so clety. Trustworthy writers even say it was one of the more conspicuous factors in the making of society; and when one is asked whether poetry, that is, emotional rhythmic utterances, must be regarded as a decreasing factor in contemporary social progress, one faces a question of socio logical as well as of literary interest, and one must answer it on broader ground than biograph ical criticism, in clearer terms than can be fur hished by those old hysterics about genius. To treat the question as it is almost invariably treated, to make it an ingenious speculation whether any more great poets can arise under our modern conditions, whether Goethe, if he were born now, would not be Simply a great naturalist, and whether Robert Browning or Huxley better solved the riddle of the painful earth, - all this is to keep up an unwholesome separation of po etics from vital and moving sciences, and to make the discussion itself mere chatter.
