Using much previously-unpublished photographic, art and manuscript material from the Liddle Collection in the Library of the University of Leeds, this book aims to bring readers closer to the British soldiers, sailors and airmen of World War I. Contemporary evidence has captured much individual experience of the battlefield, and changes in attitude and culture as the war moved people from their familiar daily round to hugely-changed surroundings, through prolonged months, then years, of challenge. Civilian life is reflected too, from the industrial scene and rationing to conscientious objectors. The topics covered include pre-war society, the call the arms, war in the air, the Dardenelles, the maritime challenge, soldiering in distant parts, the Home Front, soldier and civilian captivity, soldiering on the Western Front, and the Armistice and beyond. Peter Liddle has written 12 previous World War I books, and the Channel 4 television series, "The 1916 Battle of the Somme", was based on his work.

July 30, 1945: The heavy cruiser U.S.S. Indianapolis was sunk by a torpedo. 1,196 men went into the water. When rescue arrived five days later, only 317 remained. What happened during those five terrible days? Full of harrowing personal accounts from survivors, and written by a veteran who served aboard the cruiser before the attack, Ordeal by Sea chronicles the stark human drama and sensational aftermath of one of the worst disasters in naval history. The story of the doomed mission was immortalized in the film Jaws as Quint remembers the intense, brutal and awful experience of the sailors as sharks tore into the floating survivors. Thirst and hunger were also added to the sailors torments as they wondered if the would be rescued from the merciless sea, their bravery and indomitable spirit is captured in this brillitant book. A dramatic and gripping read.

The Ordeal written by Henry Charles Lea and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-09 with History categories.

Henry Charles Lea was one of the first American historians to use what would later be termed comparative and anthropological approaches to history. Under his pen, the study of the medieval ordeal becomes a study in cultural history. Reprinted here from the fourth revised edition of 1892, the book begins by tracing the role of the ordeal in non-Western and ancient societies, showing the mental world to which it belongs: a limited trust in the public order and purely human methods of inquiry, and a larger faith in divine intervention and immanent justice. The work then describes the uses of the institution through the European Middle Ages to its final abolition, and in the process offers a rich typology of ordeals. Additional documents included in this edition present formulas and descriptions of some of the ordeals most frequently used: the ordeal by boiling water, by hot water, by cold water, by hot iron and water, by glowing plowshares, by fire, and the ordeal of the cross.

From August 1941 convoys of merchant ships gathered in Scottish ports or at Reykjavik and crossed the Arctic Ocean carrying war materials and Red Cross supplies for the Russian cities of Murmansk and Archangel. Each voyage was a struggle for survival through treacherous seas, ice-packs, snowstorms, and the Arctic darkness. The sailors struggled against German bomber planes, U-Boats, and destroyers, as well as the battleship Tirpitz. To survive the sea crossing was just the beginning as they also had to survive the Arctic winter. Georges Blond recreates these voyages, and the heroism of the ships' crews, through official documents, ships' logs, and eye-witness testimony. He conveys the drama and feats of endurance that led Winston Churchill to describe the Arctic convoys as "the worst journey in the world."

by MARTIN M. NUZA Published: Jan 2007 Pages: 390 Description PROMISES: THE MASON ORDEAL.EMILY'S HARROWING STORY. After the turn of the twentieth century, America was at the threshold of one of the worst depressions the world had ever witnessed. The depression changed the lives of millions of law-abiding citizens; the rich suddenly became poor, jobs were scarce and people struggled to survive, some with very low income - others with no income at all. The suicide rate rose higher than ever before as people lost their homes, their farms, their lands and their entire possessions and they were impotent to do anything about it and could only watch helplessly, as their lives changed exasperatedly, for the worst. Prostitution bloomed and many married and single women alike were forced to sell their bodies just to live another day - these were rough times indeed. Corruption flourished, as a number of conniving individuals who managed to maintain their power were looked upon as Gods and consequently controlled everything, creating a vast web of black-market and crime with the only authority being the green dollar bill. Even after the worst months of the depression took their toll and it seemed that the worst was over, people were still struggling to survive - rebuilding their shattered lives, living in shacks and at the mercy of those who had the green bills. As a result of this, cheap labour skyrocketed to unseen proportions to the extent that people would virtually work for free, as long as they had enough to put food on their tables. One of the families who suffered greatly during those harsh times was that of the Mason's: Jack Mason was married to Emily and between them they had two sons and one daughter which they raised with love and harmony, surrounded by the security offered by Jack's executive position, that is, until the depression struck and Jack lost everything, turning to the bottle for seclusion and changing his entire way of life, forever. This is their story, the story of Emily Mason, who with courage and determination never imagined how high a price she would have to pay to keep her family together.

After the years of turmoil and tragedy, life at La Bonne Vie Plantation settled into placid contentment (or a semblance of such) ... until Nicolas (Nicky) Fontenot, prodigal son of Angelique and her brother François, returns after years in a Texas prison, and Antoine Babineaux II returns to claim his father’s name. At the heart of the story, and the hearts of Antoine and Nicolas, is beautiful, incorrigible Desirée Fontenot, the image of her mother Angelique. Ghosts of the past rise up and the lurid whispers and innuendos come to life once again. Then Uncle Virgil Leveque, the catalyst of the earlier tragedy, returns home after thirty years in an insane asylum, and unwittingly becomes the agent provocateur that sends the story hurtling toward its conclusion and closure at last. But is there truly closure?
