Gender and Exemplarity in Medieval and Early Modern Spain gathers a series of studies on the interplay between gender, sanctity and exemplarity in regard to literary production in the Iberian peninsula. The first section examines how women were con¬strued as saintly examples through narratives, mostly composed by male writers; the second focuses on the use made of exemplary life-accounts by women writers in order to fashion their own social identity and their role as authors. The letter's essential quality--speaking for someone in his absence--includes the letter's intermediary function, its inscription of time, and reader consciousness. Medieval letters were written in accord with the ars dictaminis, a rhetorical form applying Cicero's rules for oration to letter-writing. With humanism, rhetorical techniques from the ars praedicandi and the ars notaries were often incorporated. Women took advantage of the opportunity, modifying the letter-form and using it for their own ends. Teresa de Cartegena's Admiraçión operum Dey and Leonor López de Córdoba's Memorias are among the few women's writings extant from medieval Spain. A number of studies examine them from different perspectives, but there have been none focusing on the ways Teresa and Leonor utilize dictaminal principles and inherent properties of the letter for their unique purposes within the context of the epistolary tradition. This study offers an overview of the ars dictaminis outlining basic principles of the ars praedicandi and the ars notaries, and provides necessary information for understanding analysis of the writings. The second chapter investigates the life and education of Teresa de Cartagena for elements that influenced her composition. It offers an analysis of Admiraçión operum Dey focused on adherence to dictaminal form, incorporation of new elements, and usage of inherent epistolary properties. Chapter four studies the background of Leonor López de Córdoba and the Memorias . The conclusion summarizes the contributions of Teresa de Cartagena and Leonor López de Córdoba to epistolary tradition. Aspects of both writings reappear in later literary forms.
