Author and journalist Brian Mooney was winding down after walking 1,300 miles from Coggeshall to Rome when a friend made a teasing comment: "In the old days pilgrims didn't have the luxury of flying back. They walked home!" Two years later, Brian rose to the challenge. He packed his rucksack, laced up his walking-boots and set off to make the journey in reverse. The Wrong Way for a Pizza is the account of his ten-week walk from the banks of the Tiber to the banks of the Blackwater - a mirror-image of A Long Way for a Pizza, the book he wrote after he walked to Rome in 2010. The author keeps bumping into the ghosts of his outward journey. He gets used to being told by Rome-bound pilgrims that he is walking the wrong way round, and, with the sun behind him lighting up the Tuscan landscape, he revels in different vistas and new horizons. Varying the route from his outward journey, he crosses the Alps and makes his way across the Jura, then follows the Buirgundy Canal to the Yonne and Seine, and on to Paris. His arrival in Canterbury is greeted by a wall of indifference but he finds a warmer welcome in Basildon, where he spends the final night of his journey - although he cannot help reflecting that Basildon is not quite the Eternal City.

It all started on July 30, 1983 when a twenty-two year old who had no idea what they were going to do with their life saw an add in the paper for a pizza delivery driver and at about 7:00 o'clock that same night I ran to my car with my first pizza delivery. Since that first night I have made in the neighborhood of 400,000 deliveries in thirty-one years and driven an estimated 1,000,000 miles of driving. Along the way I was robbed five times and two attempted that I know of and two car accidents one almost fatal. In thirty-one years I have delivered pizzas in every conceivable weather condition and have met and delivered pizzas to people from all over all world. I also met my best friend along the way along with several others who I consider life long friends and although the cities and stores my have changed along the way there was one consent and that is I loved what I did for thirty-one years. So come along on a wonderful and wild adventure though 31 years in the pizza delivery business.
