Excerpt from A Manual of Civil Engineering The tables of the strength of materials at the end of the volume give, as regards iron and stone, average and extreme results only. Detailed information as to the strength of different kinds of stone and iron is given in the course of the text, under the proper headings. I have, throughout the book, adhered to a systematic arrange ment as far as was practicable, and have only departed from it in a few instances, when it became necessary to introduce questions that had arisen, or facts that had been ascertained, after the completion of the part of the work to which they properly belonged. In drawing up the table of contents and the alphabetical index care has been taken to show where such detached pieces of information are to be found. Excerpt from The Civil Engineer's Pocket-Book Bould experts in engineering complain that they do not find anything of interest in this volume, the writer would merely remind them that it was not his intention that they should. The book has been prepared for young members of the profession and one Of the leading Objects has been to elucidate, in plain English, a few important elementary principles which the savants have envel Oped in such a haze of mystery as to render pursuit hopeless to any but a confirmed mathematician. Comparatively few engineers are good mathematicians; and in the writer's opinion, it is fortunate that such is the case; for nature rarely combines high mathematical talent, with that practical tact, and observation of outward things, so essential to a successful engineer. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A special 25th anniversary edition of the beloved book that has changed millions of lives with the story of an unforgettable friendship, the timeless wisdom of older generations, and healing lessons on loss and grief—featuring a new afterword by the author “A wonderful book, a story of the heart told by a writer with soul.”—Los Angeles Times “The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.” Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was his college professor Morrie Schwartz. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn’t you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man’s life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final “class”: lessons in how to live. “The truth is, Mitch,” he said, “once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie’s lasting gift with the world.

Civil Engineering Specifications And Contracts Classic Reprint written by Richard I. D. Ashbridge and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-29 with Architecture categories.

Excerpt from Civil Engineering Specifications and Contracts In engineering work, often involving millions of dollars and the labor of thousands of men for months, there can be no more important matters for the interested parties to consider than exactly what is to be done, how it. is to be done, and what it is going to cost. An important contractual relation, which is to last sometimes for years, is to be entered into and, to avoid trouble and litigation, the "meeting of the minds" must be exact on all points. On the one hand the interests of the corporation or individual for whom the work is to be done must be carefully safeguarded; on the other hand, no injustice must be done the contractor, nor any provisions introduced or omitted which will prevent him from making an honest profit on his work. The author, who has a wide experience in Civil Engineering work, has tried first to develop a logical system of preparing specifications, and to present a method of avoiding the mistakes and omissions all too common in papers of this kind. He has also attempted to cover all types of specifications from railroad work, bridges, culverts, excavations, fills, tunnels, and road-beds to country and city paving. In addition to typical specifications, the proposal, agreement, and contract forms are discussed and illustrated. Advice is also given as to the points to be considered and avoided in drawing up a set of specifications and in properly drafting a contract. Altogether, a thorough presentation of this important subject has been given and it is hoped that this volume will be a distinct contribution to engineering literature. Excerpt from An Elementary Course of Civil Engineering: For the Use of the Cadets of the United States Military Academy The author claims no merit for the contents of the work; the ideas and precepts, which it embodies, are but a part of the common stock belonging to the profession in general he has only endeavored to exercise a discriminating judgment in selecting from the various sources of information, both written and oral, to which he had access, what seemed to him most worthy of confidence. The faults of the work, of which no one can be more sensible than the author is, are peculiarly his own; its merits must be shared among many abler authorities both among the dead and living.
