Since 1968, the name of motion picture director George Romero has been synonymous with the living dead. His landmark film Night of the Living Dead formed the paradigm of modern zombie cinema; often cited as a metaphor for America during the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement, the film used the tenets of the drive-in horror movie genre to engage the sociophobics of late-1960s culture. Subsequently Romero has created five more zombie films, and other directors, including Tom Savini and Zack Snyder, have remade Romero's movies. This survey of those remakes examines ways in which the sociocultural contexts of different time periods are reflected by changes to the narrative (and the zombies) of Romero's original versions.

A study of the natural world as imagined by contemporary writers, specifically their portrayals of nature as monster In Zombiescapes and Phantom Zones: Ecocriticism and the Liminal from “Invisible Man” to “The Walking Dead,” Lee Rozelle chronicles the weirdest, ugliest, and most mixed-up characters to appear on the literary scene since World War II—creatures intimately linked to damaged habitats that rise from the muck, not to destroy or rule the world, but to save it. The book asks what happens to these landscapes after the madness, havoc, and destruction. What monsters and magic surface then? Rozelle argues that zombiescapes and phantom zones depicted in the book become catalysts for environmental reanimation and sources of hope. Liminality offers exciting and useful new ways to conceptualize places that have historically proven troublesome, unwieldy, or hard to define. Zombiescapes can reduce the effects of pollution, promote environmental justice, lessen economic disparity, and localize food production. Annual video revenues have exceeded box office returns for over twenty-five years. In short, video has become the structuring discourse of US movie culture. This book results from my teenage fixation on monsters and mutations. If beauty is the trademark of oppression and order, deformity is the aesthetical precognition of revolution (monstrum means 'wonder', no less than 'horrible shape'). Monstrosity is a logic of disgregation, a way of naming the new; that's why revolution can find appropriate expression only in its open shape: Zappa's mutations, Romero's zombies, Nagai's robots. Contrary to Pomo populism, though, the author knows the difference between Art and Revolution, and investigates the possibilities of revolutionary art under capitalism, in an on-going confrontation with the perverse and polymorphous joys of his teenage heroes. Zappa, Romero and Nagai not only provide us with the central insight that phantasy is a way of seeing the world AS IT IS; they reveal the impotence of every Critical Theorist unable to take part in the event criticised.
