Students of the Civil War tend to think the story of Robert E. Lee's 1862 Maryland Campaign is complete, and that any new study of the subject must by necessity rely on interpretations long-since accepted and understood. But what if this is not the case? What if the histories previously written about the first major Confederate operation north of the Potomac River missed key sources, proceeded from mistaken readings of the evidence, or were influenced by Lost Cause ideology? Alexander B. Rossino, the author of Six Days in September, demonstrates that distortions like these continue to shape modern understanding of the campaign in Their Maryland: The Army of Northern Virginia From the Potomac Crossing to Sharpsburg in September 1862.Rossino reassesses the history of the Confederate operation in seven comprehensive chapters, each of which tackles a specific major issue:- Did Robert E. Lee Intend to Foment Rebellion in Maryland in September 1862?- The Army of Northern Virginia Crosses the Potomac to Liberate Maryland- Confederate Encampments Near Frederick City and the Implications for the Lost Orders Debate- Maryland Civilians and Confederate Failure in the State- Rebels Photographed in Frederick, Maryland: The Case for September 1862- A Critical Re-Assessment of Robert E. Lee's Defensive Strategy at Sharpsburg- Robert E. Lee on the Field at SharpsburgDid supply problems in Virginia force Lee north to press the advantage he had won after the Battle of Second Manassas? What did Rebel troops believe about the strength of secessionist sentiment in Maryland, and why? Did the entire Army of Northern Virginia really camp at Best's Farm near Frederick, Maryland? Did D. H. Hill lose Special Orders No. 191, or is there more to the story? How did Maryland civilians respond to the Rebel army in their midst, and what part did women play? Finally, why did Robert E. Lee choose to fight at Sharpsburg, and how personally was he involved in directing the fighting?Rossino makes extensive use of primary sources to explore these and other important questions, and in doing so reveals that many long-held assumptions about the Confederate experience in Maryland do not hold up under close scrutiny. The result is a well-documented reassessment that sheds new light on old subjects.

Four centuries of Maryland’s history in one colorful and dramatic volume. “Good evening, I’m Ric Cottom. Welcome to Your Maryland.” Since 2002, when he first delivered his now-classic radio segment on Maryland history, Ric Cottom has narrated hundreds of little-known human interest stories. Collected here are 72 of his favorite on-air pieces, enhanced with beautiful papercut illustrations by Baltimore artist Annie Howe. From accused witches and the murderous career of gunsmith John Dandy through tales of Johnny U and the greatest game ever played, Your Maryland covers nearly four centuries of the Free State’s heroes and scoundrels. Entertaining listeners of all ages while sparking their interest in the past, Cottom’s beloved Your Maryland is a unique blend of carefully researched regional history and narrative nonfiction. He deftly emphasizes the human dimension of Maryland’s colorful past: its athletes (two- and four-legged), beautiful spies, brilliant writers, misunderstood pirates, and ghosts. All of that color, suspense, and humor—as well as the author’s unusual talent for discovering interesting historical facts and personages—is part of your Maryland.

To fit with the times, I first felt a need to pass along information in small tidbits that can be digested before they quickly melt into the next month. But the topic of divorce is closer to the hard-to-shallow aftertaste of life. Tidbits are short burst of flavor. They are for entertainment. Divorce is not entertainment.

This book is a labor of love born from adversity. It is the author¿s Master¿s Thesis written as a result of her experiences with the Montgomery County, Maryland legal system and the attorneys who ¿work¿ that system. It is written to provide information to women who face the difficult challenge of having the Maryland legal system micro-manage the rearing of their children via custody, support, and visitation. It is not meant to provide legal advice, but rather to inform women about the law as it relates to child custody/visitation issues and the utilization of the so-called Best Interest Attorney or BIA. Although this treatise was written in 2009, it continues to be relevant today. Having gone through the experience twice, the author has learned that mothers must be aware of the parameters of the BIA`s activities and the possibility that their recommendations may be skewed by racial, sexual or ethnic bias; or even influence from the presiding judge with no recourse available. Presently, there are no laws in place to adequately monitor BIA activities. As a result, too many children are allowed visitation with fathers who the mothers warn are abusive or have mental health issues. Yet time and time again, the court continues to ignore the warnings due to something the author refers to as the ¿Daddy Rule.¿ When the mother raises concerns, she is viewed by the court as being vindictive rather than trying to protect her children.Subsequently, the only possibility for change depends on how quickly advocacy groups form tenacious coalitions to bring about needed change in the domestic relations/family law area of the Maryland judicial system. Such action will take a massive effort, due to the utter entrenchment of the courts in the state¿s flawed legal system ¿ a system which allows manipulation by the fathers to the detriment of the children and the anguish of the mothers.

Maryland Voices Of The Civil War written by Charles W. Mitchell and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07 with History categories.

The most contentious event in our nation's history, the Civil War deeply divided families, friends, and communities. Both sides fought to define the conflict on their own terms -- Lincoln and his supporters struggled to preserve the Union and end slavery, while the Confederacy waged a battle for the primacy of local liberty or "states' rights." But the war had its own peculiar effects on the four border slave states that remained loyal to the Union. Internal disputes and shifting allegiances injected uncertainty, apprehension, and violence into the everyday lives of their citizens. No state better exemplified the vital role of a border state than Maryland -- where the passage of time has not dampened debates over issues such as the alleged right of secession and executive power versus civil liberties in wartime. In Maryland Voices of the Civil War, Charles W. Mitchell draws upon hundreds of letters, diaries, and period newspapers to portray the passions of a wide variety of people -- merchants, slaves, soldiers, politicians, freedmen, women, clergy, civic leaders, and children -- caught in the emotional vise of war. Mitchell reinforces the provocative notion that Maryland's Southern sympathies -- while genuine -- never seriously threatened to bring about a Confederate Maryland. Maryland Voices of the Civil War illuminates the human complexities of the Civil War era and the political realignment that enabled Marylanders to abolish slavery in their state before the end of the war.

The actual settlement of the Province of Maryland in 1634 was undertaken by Leonard Calvert, Lord Baltimore's second son, and the group of 200 adventurers who accompanied him on the Ark and the Dove. In addition to a succinct history of the Calvert family and the area in which they flourished in England, this work describes the life and times of the 200 passengers, their part in the founding and settlement of the colony, and the development of the feudal manorial system. In addition to a succinct history of the Calvert family and the milieu in which they flourished in England, The Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate describes the lives and times of the 200 adventurers who participated in the original expedition ot Maryland, their part in the founding and settlement of the colony, and the development of colonial Maryland's distinctive manorial system. The bulk of this volume, of course, consists of biographical and genealogical sketches of the 200 adventurers, each developed in meticulous detail from surviving documents by the famous Maryland genealogist, Harry Wright Newman. From contemporary court records, letters, and miscellaneous papers, Mr. Newman has wrought a definitive history of these early Marylanders and has accomplished, single-handedly, for the passengers of the Ark and the Dove, what has taken a legion of researchers to do for the passengers of the Mayflower
