Le thème central du 3e congrès de l'Association des historiens africains tenu à Bamako du 10 au 14 septembre 2001 offrait le double avantage d'englober la plupart des domaines de recherches historiques et d'ouvrir sur les débats d'actualité qui engagent l'avenir. Dans un monde plus que jamais unifié, notamment par le marché, et marqué également par le paradoxe apparent de la marginalisation et des exclusions, les historiens se devaient d'apporter leur contribution à la compréhension de la mondialisation, concept relativement récent qui recouvre des réalités résultant d'un processus historique de longue portée. Les contributions présentées au congrès de Bamako, ouvert aux historiens de toutes origines, s'articulent, au-delà de leur grande diversité, autour de quelques grandes préoccupations. Elles tentent d'abord d'établir un bilan critique de l'historiographie africaine de ces dernières années, suscitant ainsi le débat sur l'exercice du métier d'historien, et son " utilité " éventuelle. Quelle histoire ? Pour quel public ? Et pour quoi faire ? De la réponse à ces questions dépend en partie la pertinence de nos approches de la mondialisation. La plupart des approches présentées dans l'ouvrage s'attachent à mettre en lumière le caractère récurrent et dynamique de la mondialisation qui change de forme selon les différents " temps " que sont les séquences historiques marquées au cours de la période dite " moderne " par la traite atlantique, la colonisation ou plus récemment, la vague de néolibéralisme. Toutes ces séquences ont lourdement pesé sur le destin de l'Afrique. En faisant le constat, les analyses n'occultent nullement la question de la " responsabilité " des Africains dans ces évolutions. Les contributions ouvrent enfin sur les perspectives africaines de la mondialisation actuelle. Les enjeux, le défi de la réalisation effective de l'unité africaine, les perspectives ouvertes à cet effet par la création récente de l'Union africaine et la contribution possible des sciences sociales au renforcement d'une conscience historique africaine en faveur de cette intégration sont autant de thèmes abordés que de chantiers ouverts.

Globalisation was the buzzword of the 1990s; it promises to become even more important in the first decade of the new century. There is now a flood of literature on the economics, politics and sociology of globalization, and regular commentary in the serious daily and weekly press. Virtually all of this discussion makes assumptions, and frequently explicit claims, about the novelty of globalisation. According to one view, the globalisation is a new phenomenon that can be dated from the 1980s. A second view holds that globalisation has a long history that can be traced back to the nineteenth century, if not earlier. The importance of these themes scarcely needs elaborating. Yet they have still to attract significant attention from historians. This volume is the first by a team of historians to address these issues. Globalisation in World History has two distinctive features. First, it offers a categorisation of types and stages of globalisation that existed before the late twentieth century, No such taxonomy exists at present. Secondly, it emphasises a feature that the current debate greatly underestimates: the fact that globalisation has non-Western as well as Western origins. Globalisation is much more than the 'rise of the West' presented in new terminology. The contributors bring their expertise to bear on themes that give prominence to China, South Asia, Africa and the world of Islam as well as to Europe and the United States, and span the last three centuries while also showing an awareness of more distant antecedents. The result is a coherent and thought-provoking collection of essays. Globalisation will become a major theme of historical research during the next decade; this book will help to set the new agenda.

Africa, Empire and Globalization is a set of original essays in honor of the distinguished historian, Professor A. G. Hopkins, whose career of over fifty years covers three main areas that are global in reach, but connect to ideas that are generated in such major cities as Lagos and London. The volume celebrates the key principles that have emerged from the cumulative body of Hopkins'' work: searching for originality; extending the frontier of knowledge through new data and interpretations; questioning received assumptions and wisdom; promoting conversations between multiple, often divergent, sets of ideas from different disciplines; presenting ideas such that those within and outside of the academy can benefit; and applying theories drawn from various disciplines to organize the evidence and to present it in digestible form. The first section covers Africa, with essays on the economic history of Lagos and West Africa, the connections between economic change and imperialism, and the role of Africa in the world economy, including the trans-Saharan, trans-Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean World. The role of Africans in creating wealth and responding to new economic opportunities receives prominent attention in some chapters. In the second section, new topics on imperialism are explored, such as the British expansion to India, the role of trade in the Gambia, and the overall impact of the empire. Hopkins'' idea of "gentlemanly capitalism" generates considerable debate in various chapters, and is also applied to various contexts and places. The current issues around the theme of globalization are developed in the third section in terms of the relevance of the concept, the contributions that historians can make to the subject, the arguments for and against, and its impact on capitalism and democracy. From peace to war, from economic prosperity to economic decline, from the use of power to nationalist resurgence, the section looks at the dominant concerns of our time. Hopkins'' career, as the volume amply demonstrates, is rich, held together by interest in the connections between the local and the national, the national and the regional, and the regional and the global. In thus interconnecting the world, a philosophy of history emerges--how economic forces shape political realities.
