Exploring the symbolic meanings of the Bomb, this book excavates the "depth dimension" of the nuclear age. Rather than adding to the many ethical commentaries asking whether or not there should be nuclear weapons, the authors ask why there are nuclear weapons and a continuing arms race. They also address the kinds of symbolic changes that must occur in order to reverse the build-up of nuclear weapons. The authors approach these questions from the perspective of academic research, not from particular faith commitments, asking the reader to envision different human responses to this technology, human stances that can be illuminated by the creative insight of religious studies.

This title was first published in 2002: Many people are now interested in the relationship between religion and science, but links between Christian belief and psychology have been relatively neglected. This book opens up the dialogue between Christian theology and modern scientific psychology, approaching the dialogue in both directions. Current scientific topics like consciousness and artificial intelligence are examined from a religious perspective. Christian themes such as God's purposes and activity in the world are then examined in the light of psychology. This accessible study on psychology and Christian belief offers students and general readers alike important insights into new areas of the "science and religion" debate.

The future of all mankind and the planet he inhabits seems to be on a collision course for disaster. Nuclear proliferation and hostility between nations foster consistent rumors of impending doom among prognosticators, politicians, and preachers. What will the world be like a generation from now? Will there be peace on earth? Will there be more tension and more predictions of gloom and doom? Some have even suggested there will only be the eerie silence of a post-apocalyptic world. Can we know what the future holds? In a much-debated book of the Bible there seem to be some answers to the questions about earth's final days. The Book of Revelation, for Christians and non-Christians alike, has been more thoroughly scrutinized than any other New Testament writing. However, a close inspection of this book reveals insight into the future that can found in no other writing. This is no attempt to predict the future. It is an attempt to describe future events, whenever they occur, in more detail than is possible without a close inspection of Revelation chapters 4 through 16. In "Stormclouds on the Horizon: A Comprehensive View of Earth's Last Days", special attention is given to a future period commonly referred to as the Tribulation. The ancient prophet John the Beloved is privileged to see these future days revealed before his eyes. Unlike other books on this subject, Stormclouds reveals two viewpoints on this seven-year period given to John in this one prophetic vision.

Do you recall gazing into infinity on a star filled night and wondering how all those celestial bodies came into existence? Since the beginning of recorded history, mankind has theorized and debated, not only his placement and significance in the universe, but also whether the universe was the result of a great creation or was it always in existence. This book is about resolving mankind's cosmic debate. In the last two centuries a great divide, fueled by a supposed expanding universe and evolutional theories, has separated the camps of scientific based evolutionists and religious theologians. This book analyzes relevant historic theories about the universe and draws some startling new fact-based conclusions that dispel several of the current popular theories about the Cosmos and formulates a new theory about everything. It appears that cosmologists should have paid more attention analyzing assumptions behind their theories and less time trying to support their own perspectives. This new factual based revelation formulates a nexus between scientific evidence and religious teachings, which bridges the great cosmic divide. A native California, he graduated from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo in 1975 as a Mechanical Engineer with a Nuclear concentration. He worked 36 years in the electrical utility industry within Power Generating. He learned how to resolve complex technical problems by gathering and analyzing factual information, challenging assumptions, analyzing the many variables, and finding workable solutions. He also used these same problem-solving techniques to debate and distill the truth about various subjects outside of engineering. Married to Christine, they have raised two lovely daughters and are now enjoying being grandparents. For many years he pondered the genesis of the Cosmos. As a Christian, he searched for the nexus between science and creation, hoping to provide an explanation that would unite science and religion. Being retired, he has put his energy into one of his passion to write about what he has uncovered in the science of cosmology. He believes that how we grow and learn to question and solve complex ideas, is essential to helping us unlock the truth behind unresolved questions, and even help us to sort out the origins of the universe.

God S Wounds Hermeneutic Of The Christian Symbol Of Divine Suffering Volume Two written by Jeff B. Pool and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-01 with Religion categories.

This book constitutes the second volume of a three-volume study of Christian testimonies to divine suffering: God's Wounds: Hermeneutic of the Christian Symbol of Divine Suffering, vol. 2, Evil and Divine Suffering. The larger study focuses its inquiry into the testimonies to divine suffering themselves, seeking to allow the voices that attest to divine suffering to speak freely, then to discover and elucidate the internal logic or rationality of this family of testimonies, rather than defending these attestations against the dominant claims of classical Christian theism that have historically sought to eliminate such language altogether from Christian discourse about the nature and life of God. This second volume of studies proceeds on the basis of the presuppositions of this symbol, those implicit attestations that provide the conditions of possibility for divine suffering-that which constitutes divine vulnerability with respect to creation-as identified and examined in the first volume of this project: an understanding of God through the primary metaphor of love (God is love); and an understanding of the human as created in the image of God, with a life (though finite) analogous to the divine life-the imago Dei as love. The second volume then investigates the first two divine wounds or modes of divine suffering to which the larger family of testimonies to divine suffering normally attest: (1) divine grief, suffering because of betrayal by the beloved human or human sin; and (2) divine self-sacrifice, suffering for the beloved human in its bondage to sin or misery, to establish the possibility of redemption and reconciliation. Each divine wound, thus, constitutes a response to a creaturely occasion. The suffering in each divine wound also occurs in two stages: a passive stage and an active stage. In divine grief, God suffers because of human sin, betrayal of the divine lover by the beloved human: divine sorrow as the passive stage of divine grief; and divine anguish as the active stage of divine grief. In divine self-sacrifice, God suffers in response to the misery or bondage of the beloved human's infidelity: divine travail (focused on the divine incarnation in Jesus of Nazareth) as the active stage of divine self-sacrifice; and divine agony (focused on divine suffering in the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth) as the passive stage of divine self-sacrifice.
