Can Christian belief be warranted? Can someone hold to Christian exclusivism even in the face of mutually exclusive religious belief systems? In contemporary philosophy of religion there has been much debate about whether the diversity of mutually exclusive religious beliefs is a good reason to give up any form of religious exclusivism. Amidst this discussion, the Christian exclusivist claims that the tenets of Christianity are true, and mutually exclusive religious views are false. Opponents of Christian belief argue, however, that the diversity of mutually exclusive religious beliefs is a good reason to give up one's Christian exclusivism. This is the problem of religious diversity for Christian exclusivism. In this book, Joseph Kim defends Christian belief in conversation with the problem of religious diversity and argues that mutually exclusive religious beliefs do not serve as defeaters for Christian belief. Kim engages Alvin Plantinga's proper function account of warrant and argues that the Christian exclusivist need not give up her Christian belief when faced with the problem of religious diversity even when she is unable to give an argument for the truth of Christian belief to those that disagree. This book deals with a limited aspect of religion. Any well-developed religion is a very complex entity which unites components of very different sorts. There is probably no living religion that does not involve a set of characteristic beliefs, some prescribed or recommended practices (public or private, or both), some characteristic feelings or emotions, and some institutions or social arrangements. In addition, religions usually involve their adherents in special forms of experience. With respect to the complexity that it generates, interest in religion is similar to other pervasive human interests and activities, such as those that generate scientific enterprises. For some purposes, however, it is useful to separate the aspects of a complex phenomenon and to discuss one or another of these aspects individually, so far as is possible. This is the procedure that I will adopt here. My discussion is aimed primarily at that element of religious interest that centers upon belief, with what one might call the noetic aspect of religion. Some of the other aspects that I have mentioned- most notably religious experience and, to a much smaller extent, religious institutions- are discussed, but only to the extent that I take them to be relevant to questions about belief. But, of course, the should not be construed to imply that these other aspects of religion are unimportant.

At the core of Scripture and Knowledge lies the problem of the nature of religious knowledge. The author argues that religion is a particular framework rather than a particular content or defined set of performances. He sees this framework as epistemological, that is, as one that furnishes believers with a conception of knowledge alternative to that of philosophical reasoning. The thesis on the epistemological nature of religion will be developed by the examination of the concept of scripture as a body of authoritative and even infallible texts. The concept of scripture is presented as one of the constitutive concepts of the epistemological framework of religion. The author argues that the various scriptures and their commentaries should be understood as the arena within which the epistemological process of religion takes place and the central epistemological means by which religious knowledge is made possible.
