Advances in space-borne technologies lead to improvements in observations and have a notable impact on geodesy and its applications. As a consequence of these improvements in data accuracies, spatial and temporal resolutions, as well as the developments in the methodologies, more detailed analyses of the Earth and a deeper understanding of its state and dynamic processes are possible today. From this perspective, this book is a collection of the selected reviews and case-study articles that report the advances in methodology and applications in geodesy. The chapters in the book are mainly dedicated to the Earth’s gravity field theory and applications, sea level monitoring and analysis, navigation satellite systems data and applications, and monitoring networks for tectonic deformations. This collection is a current state analysis of the geodetic research in theory and applications in today’s modern world.

Following the GPS, new GNSS techniques are emerging today. Various surveying and processing methods are available for the analysis of GNSS data. Equipment and software are also varied. The orbit quality, controlled by the system designer, and the IGS are continuously improved. The user is mainly interested in the quality of position and of the deformation rates produced by the GNSS. Hence, research needs to guide the user in terms of selecting the best combination of the available methods and instrumentation to produce the desired accuracy. This book reviews the current available accuracy obtainable using the GNSS methods. In fact, the main aim of this book is to make an impact on young researchers so that they keep updating the accuracy of GNSS for future generations.

This book extends the scientific bestseller "GPS - Theory and Practice" to cover Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and includes the Russian GLONASS, the European system Galileo, and additional systems. The book refers to GNSS in the generic sense to describe the various existing reference systems for coordinates and time, the satellite orbits, the satellite signals, observables, mathematical models for positioning, data processing, and data transformation. This book is a university-level introductory textbook and is intended to serve as a reference for students as well as for professionals and scientists in the fields of geodesy, surveying engineering, navigation, and related disciplines.

Interferometry with the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) is the most efficient method of establishing three-dimensional geodetic control on local and regional scales. This is already true, even though the constellation of satellites is incomplete. We consider some theoretical and practical aspects of using differenced carrier-phase observations of the GPS satellites to establish three-dimensional control networks. We present simple and efficient algorithms for processing multi-station, multi-satellite observations. These algorithms have been used to establish three-dimensional control networks. Under widely varying conditions, we have obtained accuracies of 1 to 1.5 parts per million (ppm) in all three coordinates, or by 1 to 3 cm for the coordinates differences between network stations separated 10 to 20 km. when interferometry is used also to determine the satellite orbits, we anticipate improvement of the accuracy of regional control networks to the level of 0.1 ppm. Keywords: Geodesy; Geodetic control; Geodetic networks; Three dimensional geodesy; Satellite geodesy; NAVSTAR Global Positioning System; and Interferometry.
