Im Folgenden steht der Ausdruck "Tiere" allgemein für "nicht-menschliche Tiere". Reicht je nach wissenschaftlichem Diskurs die Reichweite der Moral nur zum Menschen oder schließt sie auch unsere tierischen Mitbewohner mit ein? Was unterscheidet den Menschen von nicht-menschlichen Tieren und was haben sich im Laufe der Jahre für unterschiedliche Theorien dazu hinauskristallisiert? Im Weiteren werden die Unterschiede im moralischen Kreis thematisiert, um im Anschluss Ausrichtungen des Tierschutzes aufzuzeigen. Zum Abschluss werden zwei gegensätzliche Positionen in der Tierethik gegenübergestellt. Die Mensch-Tier-Beziehung ist in unserem Leben allgegenwärtig und das seit vielen Jahrhunderten. Der Mensch hat seine Stellung zu den nicht-menschlichen Tieren seit der Antike immer wieder neu definiert, vor allem aber seine Sonderstellung. Das Weltbild war geprägt von männlicher Herrschaft über Tiere, Frauen und Sklaven, so wurde das Tier entweder moralisch ausgeklammert oder ihm wurde ein geringerer Stellenwert eingeräumt. Aber wie sieht es heute aus? Der technische Fortschritt hat nicht nur den menschlichen Lebensstandard verändert, sondern auch das der Haus- und Nutztiere. Das Haustier von heute ist vor allem eine Katze oder ein Hund und wird häufig wird auf einem Facebook- oder Instagramaccount dargestellt. If philosophy has any business in the world, it is the clarification of our thinking and the clearing away of ideas that cloud the mind. In this book, one of the world's preeminent philosophers takes issue with an idea that has found an all-too-prominent place in popular culture and philosophical thought: the idea that while factual claims can be rationally established or refuted, claims about value are wholly subjective, not capable of being rationally argued for or against. Although it is on occasion important and useful to distinguish between factual claims and value judgments, the distinction becomes, Hilary Putnam argues, positively harmful when identified with a dichotomy between the objective and the purely "subjective." Putnam explores the arguments that led so much of the analytic philosophy of language, metaphysics, and epistemology to become openly hostile to the idea that talk of value and human flourishing can be right or wrong, rational or irrational; and by which, following philosophy, social sciences such as economics have fallen victim to the bankrupt metaphysics of Logical Positivism. Tracing the problem back to Hume's conception of a "matter of fact" as well as to Kant's distinction between "analytic" and "synthetic" judgments, Putnam identifies a path forward in the work of Amartya Sen. Lively, concise, and wise, his book prepares the way for a renewed mutual fruition of philosophy and the social sciences.

From the unfaithful husband to the binge eater, from the secret cross-dresser to the pilferer of worthless items, there are those who seem to live two lives, to be divided selves, to be literally of two minds. This division or "vertical split" appears in a person at odds with himself, a person who puzzles over, and even heartily dislikes, that parallel person who behaves in so repugnant a manner. In Being of Two Minds, Arnold Goldberg provides trenchant insight into such divided minds - their origins, their appearances, and their treatment. Goldberg's inquiry into divided minds leads to a return to the psychoanalytic concept of disavowal, which forms the basis of the vertical split. Goldberg explores the developmental circumstances that tend to a reliance on disavowal, provides numerous examples of the emergence of disavowal in the treatment situation, and considers the therapeutic approaches through which disavowal may be addressed. He is especially perceptive in discussing the manner in which the therapist's own tendency to disavow may collusively interact with that of the patient. Goldberg considers the full range of splits to which disavowal gives rise, from circumscribed instances of dissociation to the much-debated multiple personality disorders. He gives special attention to the role of the vertical split in patients with behavior disorders; here his thoughtful insights point to a treatment approach that significantly differs both from the simple ascription of a 'self disorder' and from the usual pedagogical emphasis on issues of self-control and/or punishment. As Goldberg shows, the repugnance felt by many therapists for offensive behaviors emanating from the patient's parallel self are frequently shared by the patient, who commonly despises misbehavior that he is unable to understand. Being of Two Minds begins to formulate just such understanding, to the great benefit of patient and therapist alike.

A philosophical investigation into the connections between trust and violence The limiting of violence through state powers is one of the central projects of the modern age. Why then have recent centuries been so bloody? In Trust and Violence, acclaimed German intellectual and public figure Jan Philipp Reemtsma demonstrates that the aim of decreasing and deterring violence has gone hand in hand with the misleading idea that violence is abnormal and beyond comprehension. We would be far better off, Reemtsma argues, if we acknowledged the disturbing fact that violence is normal. The New Testament contains four accounts of the life of Jesus. To some people in antiquity, four was too many.
