›Medienwandel‹ ist eines der bestimmenden Schlagwörter im medien- und kommunikationswissenschaftlichen Fachdiskurs geworden. Zugleich zeigt sich, dass dieses ›Totalphänomen‹ begrifflich schwer zu fassen ist. Auffällig häufig wird der Begriff ›Medienwandel‹ primär auf ›neue‹ Medien, Technologien und Innovationen bezogen. Dabei wird systematisch vernachlässigt, dass jeder Wandel ein Vorher und Nachher hat und dass aktuelle Phänomene erst durch eine diachrone Betrachtung und die Einordnung in größere historische Zusammenhänge zu verstehen sind. Der vorliegende Band will diese Lücke schließen und einen substanziellen Beitrag zur Theoriebildung wie auch zur Systematisierung zukünftiger Forschungen zum Medienwandel leisten. Dafür wird ›Medienwandel‹ in den einzelnen Beiträgen unter evolutions- und innovationstheoretischen, kultur- sowie geschichtstheoretischen Perspektiven betrachtet.

This book deals with the connection between media and the future. It is about the imagination of futuristic media and what this says about the present, but it also shows how media are imagined as means to control the future. The book begins by describing different theories of the evolution of media and by exploring how this evolution is tied to expectations regarding the future. The authors discuss the theories of imagination and how the imagination of media futures operates. To do so, they analyse four concrete examples: the imaginations once related to interactive television and how they were performed in an important piece of media art; those on “ubiquitous computing,” which remain present today; those on three-dimensional, especially holographic, displays that are prevalent everywhere in cinema, and lastly the contemporary imaginations on quantum computing and how they have been enacted in science fiction. The book appeals to readers interested in the question of how our present imagines its technological futures.

In this volume, leading scholars of photography and media examine photography’s vital role in the evolution of media and communication in the nineteenth century. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the introduction of telegraphy, the development of a cheaper and more reliable postal service, the rise of the mass-circulation press, and the emergence of the railway dramatically changed the way people communicated and experienced time and space. Concurrently, photography developed as a medium that changed how images were produced and circulated. Yet, for the most part, photography of the era is studied outside the field of media history. This book shows how in nineteenth-century Britain, confronted with the newly industrialized and urbanized modern world, writers, artists, journalists and impresarios tried to gain an overview of contemporary history. They drew on two successive but competing conceptual models of overview: the panorama and the compilation. Both models claimed to offer a holistic picture of the present moment, but took very different approaches. This book shows that panoramas (360° views previously associated with the Romantic period) and compilations (big data projects previously associated with the Victorian fin de siècle) are intertwined, relevant across the entire century, and often remediated, making them crucial lenses through which to view a broad range of genre and forms. It brings together interdisciplinary research materials belonging to different period silos to create new understandings of how nineteenth-century audiences dealt with information overload. It argues for a new politics of distance: one that recognizes the value of immersing oneself in a situation, event or phenomenon, but which also does not chastise us for trying to see the big picture.
