This paper is an examination of contemporary compositional techniques to percussion works. The techniques described include set-based techniques, time-point methods, temporal structures, and indeterminacy. The works examined represent a variety of instrumental configurations, in an effort to offer examples from many of the common percussion genres. Composers discussed in this paper include Hans Werner Henze, Charles Wuorinen, John Cage, David Lang, Iannis Xenakis, and Morton Feldman. Each section of this paper begins by introducing the genre and sample work. This is followed by a description of the compositional technique used and an analysis of that technique to the sample work. The bulk of each section consists of musical examples with an analysis of a segment of the sample work that demonstrates how the composer used the technique. This paper is geared towards composers interested in learning abou tboth recent compositional techniques and seminal works from the percussion repertoire. This information will also be useful to percussionists seeking to better understand the architecture of the music they are performing. One goal of this paper is to create a foundation for future analysis of percussion works and addresses the particularities of works by prominent composers that receive little analytical attention.
