The Well-Tempered Marimbist is a set of compositions for the two mallet percussionist. The collection consists of 24 etudes, each in a different key, similar to the pivotal Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach. Most of the new music available is for 4-mallets, leaving those learning keyboard percussion without much of a selection for music that is current. This book contains music that fits many genres from traditional melodic development to music that would be classified as modern or 21st Century. WTM includes a wide range of solos for the beginning mallet player to the advanced level percussionist. The easier pieces are great for sight-reading practice as well. These solos are excellent pieces for recitals and solo performances as audiences will love the outstanding melodies. The percussionist will enjoy how well each piece lays on the instrument. This book is sure to become a classic for many generations and is an excellent source to have in the library of every percussionist.

Congas Full Circle satisfies a missing link in percussion literature. This is the first book for congas and hand drumming that breaks down the patterns of various styles (almost 50!) into small sections that can be digested easier. Although there are many high quality books for hand drummers, the books merely notate the patterns without teaching the reader how to play the rhythms. Congas Full Circle will fill that void. The book includes many exercises to teach the reader how to play rudiments on congas while improving your quality of sound. There are also examples of styles for djembe, batá, bongos, and cajones with music spanning from early African patterns to modern day Salsa and Timba. With almost 400 pages, this is the most comprehensive book on congas available.

This paper is an examination of contemporary compositional techniques to percussion works. The techniques described include set-based techniques, time-point methods, temporal structures, and indeterminacy. The works examined represent a variety of instrumental configurations, in an effort to offer examples from many of the common percussion genres. Composers discussed in this paper include Hans Werner Henze, Charles Wuorinen, John Cage, David Lang, Iannis Xenakis, and Morton Feldman. Each section of this paper begins by introducing the genre and sample work. This is followed by a description of the compositional technique used and an analysis of that technique to the sample work. The bulk of each section consists of musical examples with an analysis of a segment of the sample work that demonstrates how the composer used the technique. This paper is geared towards composers interested in learning abou tboth recent compositional techniques and seminal works from the percussion repertoire. This information will also be useful to percussionists seeking to better understand the architecture of the music they are performing. One goal of this paper is to create a foundation for future analysis of percussion works and addresses the particularities of works by prominent composers that receive little analytical attention. The percussion repertoire includes numerous works with interesting musical structures, compositional devices, and unique instrumentation. Percussion music can offer a fresh perspective on established ideas, and because of its flexible instrumentation, provide opportunities for unique musical developments.
