Existing works on parametric amplifiers deal mostly with the physical aspects of the device, the analysis and design of simple coupling circuits. The parametric converter is studied from the circuit theory point of view. The wellknown small signal approach is used and the nonlinear capacitance is approximated by a periodically varying capacitance. A general circuit configuration is considered where the variable capacitance is imbedded in an arbitrary passive network. Formula for the power gain is derived in terms of the variable capacitance and appropriate impedances of the passive imbedding network. From the general formula, the maximum gain-bandwidth product is then studied by utilizing Bode's familiar relationships. Research is concerned with only the noninverting type parametric converter. Synthesis procedures for coupling networks to approach the optimum gain bandwidth are presented. A design example indicates that even with the above assumption, a converter with 70% bandwidth can be obtained to achieve a power gain within 1/2 db from the optimum. (Author).

This report discusses the gain-bandwidth limitations and optimum design of noninverting converters comprised of a parametric conductance in parallel with a parametric capacitance pumped in time quadrature. Useful properties of such converters are discussed in an earlier report. The circuit is of the circulator type, and the desired passband is about the isolation center. An LC equalizer is inserted between the converter and the circulator, and the design is based on the optimization of this equalizer. Two types of fundamental limitations of gain and bandwidth are discussed: those due to the converter proper and independent of the associated circuitry, and those due to the LC character of the equalizer. An approximation is made to the normally nonpositive-real admittances of the converter which allows the use of the theory of matching. The synthesis is performed on a lowpass circuit with a lowpass to double-bandpass transformation completing the design. An illustrative example considers a converter with a bandwidth of about 120 percent of center frequency. (Author).

This work is devoted to finding the bandwidth or gain-bandwidth limits of parametric amplifiers and converters haeing a single linear-time-variant (LTV) element. The limits include the effects of all the important parasitic elements of the LTV device, such as lead inductance and series resistance. The limits are applicable to a wide variety of devices, including microwave crystal diodes, tunnel diodes, p-n junction capacitors, metal-oxide-salicon capacitors, many LTV inductors, and most other two-terminal LTV devices. The limits are found for lower- and upper-sideband converters and negative resistance amplifiers with fixed pump frequency; the bandwidth limits for the upper-sideband tunable converter are also derived. As a bonus, certain design criteria result from the formulation of the bandwidth limits; these criteria prove useful in the design of practical wideband converters and amplifiers. Several examples of wideband converter designs illustrate use of the design criteria; experimental results agree very well with the theoretical predictions. (Author).
