This book constitutes an important step in demonstrating that art therapy is a unique offering for persons aged sixty-five years and older, giving the potential for enrichment and healing in those lives. Describing the various ways in which art therapy can be used in the treatment of mental and emotional problems of older adults, the editor encourages the reader to use the suggestions and concepts within or tailor them to suit one's own specific working environment or population. Divided into three sections, this book proposes creative art therapies interventions, directives, and ideas along with model programs and examples of work in different settings. Section I discusses art therapy interventions and ideas for treatment, including working with ceramics, sandtray, memory books, and directives. Section II deals with working with specific populations of older adults, caregivers of older adults, and older adults in long-term care and residential settings. In addition, working with older adults with Alzheimers disease is addressed in this section. Section III focuses on working with individual older adult clients, home-based art therapy, grandmothers raising troubled teenagers, hospice patients, and mentally ill geriatrics. Readers will find this book to be a sourcebook of information. It will have great appeal to human service practitioners, health and mental health practitioners, and educators in social work, psychology, nursing, and counseling.

When Words Have Lost Their Meaning written by Ruth Abraham and has been published by Greenwood this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Therapist Abraham shows how art can provide people with Alzheimer's disease a way to express their thoughts and emotions, when they can no longer communicate well verbally and words have lost their meaning. Abraham believes it is our moral obligation to provide elders with this tool, lest they be prematurely deemed beyond interaction. The confidence and self-esteem of elders--and that of the people who love them --can be bolstered by art therapy. And this is the first work demonstrating that art is not just busy work for those with Alzheimer's, but a profound and symbolic method allowing them to communicate. This work includes more than 70 drawings and paintings by people with Alzheimer's, and case histories of the men and women who created the artworks. Art activities, with a significant therapeutic relationship, can especially increase quality of life for people with Alzheimer's, particularly during the seven-year relatively stable period of the illness. Psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and health care workers will also find this work especially valuable and insightful.

Art Therapy To Improve Quality Of Life With Alzheimer S Affected Elders written by Lisa C. Cohn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with categories.

Care for persons with Alzheimer's disease is moving away from a medical model, toward a focus on facilitating individuals' sense of well-being (Thomas, 2007). The present study compared the impact of an art therapy/art-making directive and a passive art viewing condition on quality of life for 30 elders livng with dementia. The study showed that a collage-making art activity significantly improved quality of life during the session as measured by positive change in observed affect, engagement, and behavior. The art-viewing condition showed mixed results. The measures used were the Observing Quality of Life in Dementia scale (OQOLD) and the Quality of Life in Late-Stage Dementia scale (QUALID). A secondary goal of the study was to establish the validity of the OQOLD, and it was determined to be valid, with significant correlation to the previously validated QUALID. The study findings suggest that art therapy may be a useful tool in the effort to provide the best possible quality of life for elders living with dementia.
