THERE IS A RIVER The Story of Edgar Cayce by THOMAS SUGRUE Revised Edition New York HENRY HOLT AND COMPANY PREFACE HE story of Edgar Cayce properly belongs in the I history of hypnosis, as a chapter in evidence for 1 the theories of Armand Marc Jacques de Chaste net, Marquis de Puysegur. It was de Puysegur, not Mesmer, who in 1784 discovered hypnotism. De Puysegurs famous subject Victor went into a sleep instead of a convulsion while being magnetized, and in that state showed remark able intelligence and apparent powers of clairvoyance. Further experiments brought the same results. Other pa tients, when put to sleep, showed like powers. Walter Brom berg, in The Mind of Man 1 says Dull peasants became mentally alert, and could even foretell events or under stand things ordinarily obscure to them. Somnambulists made medical diagnoses in other patients brought before them, and foretold the future. The magnetizer of the 1820 s merely brought his patient before a competent somnambul ist, and waited for the diagnosis. ... If only modern 1 The Mind of Man, by Walter Bromberg, Harper and Brothers, New York, 1937. vii PREFACE science had such aids The clairvoyance of somnambulists became a fascinating game. But the fascinating game was not encouraged, either by the French Academy or by the medical profession, and it suffered the fate of other fads. A generation later Andrew Jackson Davis, the Poughkeepsie Seer, was practicing medical diagnosis by clairvoyance in America, but he re mained obscure and is not even mentioned in textbooks and histories of hypnotism. Hypnotism, in fact, will have nothing to do with clairvoyance it has renounced its own mother. Edgar Cayce practiced medical diagnosisby clairvoyance for. forty-three years. He left stenographic reports of 30,000 of these diagnoses to the Association for Research and En lightenment, Inc., along with hundreds of complete case reports, containing affidavits by the patients and reports by physicians. There are hundreds of people throughout the United States who will testify, at the drop of a hat, to die accuracy of his diagnoses and the efficacy of his suggestions for treatment. He did not use his ability except to prescribe for the sick and to give spiritual advice and vocational guidance when these were specifically requested. He never made any public demonstrations of his powers he was never on the stage he never sought any publicity he did not prophesy he did not seek wealth. Often his economic status was quite pre carious at best it never rose above modest security. During the period of the Cayce Hospital he was paid only seventy five dollars a week for his services. His unquestioned personal integrity, plus the excellent and voluminous records of his work and the long period that they covered, made him an ideal subject for scientific study. But scientists shunned him. He and his friends re gretted this it might have been more evidential if they, not I, had made this report. viii PREFACE I first met Edgar Cayce in 1927. At that time I made most of the preliminary notes and sketches for this book. Since then I have continually added to the material, enjoy ing the complete co-operation of the members of the Cayce family, and being accorded access to the files at all times. From June, 1939, to October, 1941, I was a guest in the house on Arctic Crescent, seeing and interviewing Mr. Cayce every day, and examiningmaterial from the files. I spent many summers at Virginia Beach, particularly those of 1929, 1930, and 1931. In addition to the members of the Cayce family I have had the good fortune to know intimately most of the other characters in the story. One of the first and most important contributors to my dossier was Mr. Cayces father, the late Leslie B. Cayce. Another was Carrie Salter House, who with her husband, the late Dr. House, and her son, Tommy, were invaluable aids and stanch friends through the years. I was not privileged to know Mr...

There Is a River is a series of 271 short studies on the Bible and water. It’s origins are in the author’s first hand experience with thirst. Through seven decades of life, he had little reason to think on the subject. Few Westerners do. Notable exceptions are overheated, underhydrated summer hikers on the mountains of the Pacific Crest Trail. Larry Carlson joined those ranks in the summer of 2013. Distances between PCT water holes are often fifteen to twenty miles. After hauling a few gallons of H20 aboard back and hip over some such distance, a light suddenly switched on. Ancient and current dwellers in arid lands get the concept of water as the precious but stingy elixir of life it is. Moderns who activate gushers with the twist of a faucet do not. We understand springs, wells, and cisterns no better than we comprehend yokes, yeast, sowing, and shepherding. Yet the inspired Word of God swims (pun intended) in archaic images demanding comprehension. There Is a River navigates Genesis through Revelation as follows: Water: Creation to Condemnation (in the beginning through the fall of man) Water: Desolation to Consolation (Noah through Joseph) Water: Serenity to Tempest (Job, poetry, Prophets) Water: Slavery to Salvation (Moses through crucifixion of Jesus Christ) Water: Resurrection through Revelation (the empty tomb through judgment and eternity)

How’s your prayer life? Are you frustrated by a lack of motivation to spend quality time with the Lord? We’ve all been there. It can all change; but how do we start? Interestingly, both Old and New Testaments speak about this. They emphasize the importance of growing in the knowledge of God by means of revelation directly from Him—speaking through the Holy Spirit straight into our heart so that we might come know Jesus in a personal and dynamic way, not just about Him. There is a River helps uncover the truth of the mystery surrounding God’s uppermost purpose for our lives. Growing in the knowledge of Him is both our responsibility and His—ours in that we must carve out time from our busy day to seek Jesus through prayer and study, God’s in that He provides the means to make it happen. It’s a spiritual thing, and He is always there to meet us as we step toward Him. CommuningWithGod.org

When Carly Green's teenage son Nathan runs away after a family confrontation, her already fragile world begins to crumble. Her marriage to Pastor Rick is on the verge of collapse, her youngest son Benny struggles with developmental challenges, and the church community she once considered family now feels like strangers. As Carly searches for Nathan, she must confront the painful secrets that have shaped her life—from her strained relationship with her husband to the decades-long rivalry with his childhood friend Keri Ann, a woman whose connection to Rick runs deeper than Carly ever imagined. Set against the backdrop of a small church community in upstate New York, "There is a River" weaves between past and present to tell a powerful story of betrayal, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal. When Carly believes she sees a mysterious figure in a boat on the Niagara River, it sets in motion a journey that will either tear her family apart forever or lead them to unexpected healing. With authentic characters and unflinching honesty about the complexities of faith, marriage, and parenting, this moving novel explores how God's grace can transform even the most broken relationships and bring light to the darkest corners of human experience. If you enjoyed "Redeeming Love," "The Shack," and "The Memory Keeper's Daughter," you'll love "There is a River."

“Setterfield’s prose feels lifted from another era, a gothic lyricism resembling old classics like Jane Eyre.” —Entertainment Weekly From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Thirteenth Tale comes a “swift and entrancing, profound and beautiful” (Madeline Miller, bestselling author of Circe) novel about how we explain the world to ourselves, ourselves to others, and the meaning of our lives in a universe that remains impenetrably mysterious. On a dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the river Thames, an extraordinary event takes place. The regulars are telling stories to while away the dark hours, when the door bursts open on a grievously wounded stranger. In his arms is the lifeless body of a small child. Hours later, the girl stirs, takes a breath and returns to life. Is it a miracle? Is it magic? Or can science provide an explanation? These questions have many answers, some of them quite dark indeed. Those who dwell on the river bank apply all their ingenuity to solving the puzzle of the girl who died and lived again, yet as the days pass the mystery only deepens. The child herself is mute and unable to answer the essential questions: Who is she? Where did she come from? And to whom does she belong? But answers proliferate nonetheless. Three families are keen to claim her. A wealthy young mother knows the girl is her kidnapped daughter, missing for two years. A farming family reeling from the discovery of their son’s secret liaison stand ready to welcome their granddaughter. The parson’s housekeeper, humble and isolated, sees in the child the image of her younger sister. But the return of a lost child is not without complications and no matter how heartbreaking the past losses, no matter how precious the child herself, this girl cannot be everyone’s. Each family has mysteries of its own, and many secrets must be revealed before the girl’s identity can be known. Once Upon a River is a glorious tapestry of a book that combines folklore and science, magic and myth. Suspenseful, romantic, and richly atmospheric, this is “a beguiling tale, full of twists and turns like the river at its heart, and just as rich and intriguing” (M.L. Stedman, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Light Between Oceans).
