Juxtaposing the most memorable and thought-provoking quotes with fascinating images from around the world, NO FOREIGN LANDS is an inspirational meditation on how we travel. From the introduction: "Over the last decade, the internet has given us the ability to travel almost anywhere, to connect with other travelers as well as locals, and to transform our journeys into media with the power to reach millions. This has made way for an unprecedented travel culture worldwide. We have entered an age where not only being world travelers, but feeling very much at home in the cultures and native languages of multiple countries, has become the everyday reality of thousands of people. Collectively, we form a nation of permanent travelers. Among many of us is a growing sense that there really are no 'foreign lands' out there, but simply more places, people, and cultures to get to know." NO FOREIGN LANDS includes quotes from: Reinhold Messner, Jim Harrison, Rumi, Willa Cather, Doug Peacock, Duke Kahanamoku, George Mallory, Jorge Luis Borges, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jack Kerouac, John Muir, Albert Einstein, and dozens more. As opposed to a simple collection of travel adages NO FOREIGN LANDS is a diverse collection, drawing from a variety of works and touching on five themes. MOMENT is about thresholds, about defining moments in our journeys, and how travel relates to perception, memory, and identity. PEOPLE recognizes the different ways we see others, and the relationships we create while traveling. It s about lessons learned from other cultures, and how they re carried home, giving new perspectives on where we re from. TERRAIN looks at the topography of a journey, and how it s inspired and ultimately informed by our connection to the land and the ways we explore it. TRANSPORT is about getting from one place to another, the pleasures and suffering, the romanticism and reality of being on the road. PLAY reflects on the example given us by children: to make yourself at home wherever you go. It s a reminder how lightheartedness, folly, and foolishness will always be at the center of travel. NO FOREIGN LANDS brings together some of the most important words on travel ever spoken or written, and helps develop new meaning and context for today's "travel culture."

Peter Doig written by Peter Doig and has been published by Hatje Cantz Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Internationalism in art categories.

Peter Doig is well known for the exotic atmospheres and dreamy narratives that appear in his work. With an uncommonly rich color palette and a unique material sensibility, he has created some of the most resonant and evocative images in contemporary painting, placing him among the most inventive painters working today. But, as this extensive volume makes clear, he is also a sophisticated visual thinker, endlessly preoccupied with the process and history of painting. No Foreign Lands is the first publication to examine in depth the conceptual underpinnings of Doig's oeuvre. Particular attention is given to the importance of motifs, themes and variations in his work, explored in over 200 paintings and works on paper from the past 13 years, among them new works never before published.Born in Edinburgh in 1959, Peter Doig was raised in Canada and spent two decades in London before moving to Trinidad, where he now lives and works. Doig graduated from St. Martin's School of Art in 1983 and the Chelsea School of Art in 1990. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994, and was included in the 2006 Whitney Biennial. In February 2013, his painting "The Architect's Home in the Ravine" sold for $12,000,000 at a London auction. The exhibition No Foreign Lands, which opened at the Scottish National Gallery before traveling to the Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, showcases works created during the past ten years, much of which the artist spent in Trinidad. The Independent called the exhibition "a thrilling show," and The Observer praised it as "mesmerizing."

Excerpt from A Girdle Round the Earth: Home Letters From Foreign Lands Territory. In fact, the new traveller gets hold Of the idea that there is no other sort, most Of it being SO unripe, tasteless, tough, and stringy; but SO soon as he gets into this California country, he finds he has been imposed upon; for in point Of ripeness, blush, and flavor, the fruit Of this ocean-bordered State has no known peer. I am glad to know this, having said some pretty mean things about California fruit, and having heard many others do the same. But it is not entirely our fault. TO win the market, Californians send out unripe, stringy, wilted stuff, because the ripened crop could not stand the Ship ping; Or if sent out ripe it gets SO over-refrigerated that the taste is much impaired. N 0, you must go to Rome to see the Pope; you must come to California to enjoy California fruit. NO other country gives you choice strawberries nine months in the year, and on no other tables will you find the strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry Side by Side for months and months together. Iowa strawberries come with May and go with June. Those Of California come with March and stay till December. Excerpt from Letters From Foreign Lands In my next communication I will refer to the medical situation in Turkey, but in the meantime will call attention to the fact that every person in the Sultan's dominions looks upon himself as a Specialist, since he fixes his charges in proportion to what he thinks his patron is able or willing to pay. There are no prices for anything in the country. The prices asked, even by the boot-blacks, the barbers and the bakers are such as the case is likely to bear and without sharp bargaining strangers get woefully eeced.
