Excerpt from Illustrated Guide Book of the Ithaca Gorge, and Its Surroundings While there are no broad streets or avenues, yet there are no narrow ones and as they cross each other at right angles, and as there are hills all around the town, save to the north, the effect in looking from the street crossings in almost any direction is picturesque in the extreme. A masterpiece of imaginative storytelling from World Fantasy award-winning author Claire North, Ithaca spins the untold story Penelope--famed wife of Odysseus--and the other abandoned women of the isle of Ithaca, as they fight for the survival of their kingdom under the watchful eyes of the goddesses of Olympus. "The greatest power we women can own, is that we take in secret . . ." Seventeen years ago, King Odysseus sailed to war with Troy, taking with him every man of fighting age from the island of Ithaca. None of them has returned, and the women of Ithaca have been left behind to run the kingdom. Penelope was barely into womanhood when she wed Odysseus. While he lived, her position was secure. But now, years on, speculation is mounting that her husband is dead, and suitors are beginning to knock at her door. No one man is strong enough to claim Odysseus' empty throne--not yet. But everyone waits for the balance of power to tip, and Penelope knows that any choice she makes could plunge Ithaca into bloody civil war. Only through cunning, wit, and her trusted circle of maids, can she maintain the tenuous peace needed for the kingdom to survive. But all of that is about to change. Because on Ithaca, everyone watches, including the gods. And there is no corner of the land where intrigue does not reign. "Claire North brings a powerful, fresh, and unflinching voice to ancient myth--darkly fascinating, raw and breathtaking." --Jennifer Saint, author of Ariadne

A military hero turned family man's past life in Ancient Greece is back to haunt him. And the stakes couldn't be higher. Fans who enjoy both suspense and sentimentality will devour this pulse-pounding, sexy drama set against the backdrop of modern-day Ithaca, New York and featuring vivid memories of Ancient Ithaki, Greece. The stakes are high. And the suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat. Get started now and enjoy the ride, because the George Hartmann Series will span twenty-six total novels. Meet Dr. George Hartmann: Rocket scientist. Ex-military hero. Fiercely devoted family man. Family is everything to George, which is why he wants desperately to keep his growing brood safe. It’s why he’s dedicated his life to a career working on the front lines of national security. And it’s why he’s kept a low profile, careful not to draw too much attention to himself. He figures a move home to Upstate New York and into a big new house is a chance to loosen up and enjoy the money his father left him, but things get turned upside down when a violent break-in endangers his sons and prompts a dramatic spiritual awakening no one could have seen coming. After all, it’s easy to dismiss as an overactive imagination when a four-year-old mentions having lived with the family before in another time and place. But the situation becomes more complicated when George experiences those same memories himself and then comes to realize that centuries-old demons may be back to haunt him. In Ithaca's Soldier, the first book in the twisty psychological thriller George Hartmann Series, George vows to find out exactly what happened in the past and how it connects to present-day circumstances while, at the same time, navigating life's ups and downs. It's almost more than one person can handle. Luckily, George has the best people to lean on. And they are always there for each other. Join the family you'll feel like you already know as, together, they explore the meaning of life beyond what lies on the surface and fight to keep each other safe. Will George be able to protect the ones he loves and find lasting peace? Praise for Ithaca's Soldier: "Astonishing debut! There can’t be enough said about this novel. This engaging tale stays with you long after the final line is read." "I couldn’t put it down! Honestly! At one point I was standing in the dining room, knew I should go to bed, but stood there reading just one more chapter ... standing up." "A one-night read for me. Started the book early and finished as the sun was coming up, so one might say my attention was captured quickly and I couldn’t put it down. Thought provoking even after I finished the book. Not your standard romance or mystery. Surprises emerge!" "Those who enjoy Alex Cross’s wonderful family and close friends in James Patterson’s series will recognize similar dynamics here. The family and friends portrayed in Ithaca’s Soldier are the best. Their emotions are genuine, their affection and loyalty absolute. Already I care about them, admire the trust they have for one another, and can’t wait to see how they support each other in the books to follow." "From the first page I was totally drawn in to this powerful story of family love and adoration of four generations. Then the incident of sheer terror scared me to death! By the end, I was streaming tears! So many emotions in a realistic setting." "Fascinating book, engaging characters, realistic dialogue, true suspense. I’m so glad this is the first in a series, because I want there to be more." "Wonderful read. I loved it. It is different from anything else I’ve read. So many twists and turns, it keeps your interest." "Really enjoyed this book. This isn’t my normal go-to for a book to read, but I could not put it down. Beautiful and moving, I can’t wait to read what is in store for the characters."

Tales of Troy: Ulysses, the sacker of cities by Andrew Lang Long ago, in a little island called Ithaca, on the west coast of Greece, there lived a king named Laertes. His kingdom was small and mountainous. People used to say that Ithaca "lay like a shield upon the sea," which sounds as if it were a flat country. But in those times shields were very large, and rose at the middle into two peaks with a hollow between them, so that Ithaca, seen far off in the sea, with her two chief mountain peaks, and a cloven valley between them, looked exactly like a shield. The country was so rough that men kept no horses, for, at that time, people drove, standing up in little light chariots with two horses; they never rode, and there was no cavalry in battle: men fought from chariots. When Ulysses, the son of Laertes, King of Ithaca grew up, he never fought from a chariot, for he had none, but always on foot. If there were no horses in Ithaca, there was plenty of cattle. The father of Ulysses had flocks of sheep, and herds of swine, and wild goats, deer, and hares lived in the hills and in the plains. The sea was full of fish of many sorts, which men caught with nets, and with rod and line and hook. Thus Ithaca was a good island to live in. The summer was long, and there was hardly any winter; only a few cold weeks, and then the swallows came back, and the plains were like a garden, all covered with wild flowers-violets, lilies, narcissus, and roses. With the blue sky and the blue sea, the island was beautiful. White temples stood on the shores; and the Nymphs, a sort of fairies, had their little shrines built of stone, with wild rose-bushes hanging over them. Other islands lay within sight, crowned with mountains, stretching away, one behind the other, into the sunset. Ulysses in the course of his life saw many rich countries, and great cities of men, but, wherever he was, his heart was always in the little isle of Ithaca, where he had learned how to row, and how to sail a boat, and how to shoot with bow and arrow, and to hunt boars and stags, and manage his hounds. A unique look into the minds and creative processes of contemporary Irish women poets, this book focuses on the transformation of their life experiences into poetry that blends personal identity with national identiry. It assembles many voices around common themes that are emerging to change Irish poetry permanently. Patricia Boyle Haberstroh, whose book Women Creating Women: Contemporary Irish Women Poets was a Choice Outstanding Academic book in 1996, shows in this new work how nine of the most prolific Irish women writers generate their poetry, broadening our understanding of the context of the poems. She pairs each author's verse with a companion (and often autobiographical) prose piece to illuminate the ways in which the poetry expresses the poet's personal experience. As women in a politically and religiously charged, male-dominated genre and country, these poets feel compelled to transcend daily life by articulating against the "norm." In this book, they describe the issues they confronted in their growth as poets and the strategies they developed to translate life into art. In linking these poets—drawn from Northern Ireland and England as well as the Republic of Ireland—Haberstroh throws into relief the characteristics that define their unique, individual subjects, themes, and styles.
