Modeling the thermal state of the oceanic crust is an important task to understand the construction of oceanic crust which covers two thirds of the surface of our planet. The interplays among magma delivery to the axis and cooling of the oceanic lithosphere as a function of both space and time are key factors to understand the creation of the oceanic crust, which is primarily determined by the overall thermal structure of mid-ocean ridges. Classical thermal models do not predict steady state axial magma chambers (AMCs) along mid-ocean ridges at spreading rates less than 30 mm/year. The identification and seismic imaging of an axial magma chamber underlying the Lucky Strike central volcano and hydrothermal field at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge provides a unique opportunity to study the thermal structure of slow spreading ridges. Here we present coupled microseismic data and thermal modeling to provide insight on the nature of ephemeral magma chambers at slow-spreading ridges, to constrain the timescales associated with changes in melt supply and the parameters that can create them, and to shed light on the different mechanisms that can result on the cooling and disappearance of these structures. Both the coupled microseismic and thermal modeling results, and the time-constraints derived from the geological constraints put forward, suggest that focused melt supply to the segment center is required regularly, and that this supply is maintained over extended periods of time, that can lead to a durable magma chamber. This thesis, while focusing on the processes occurring at the Lucky Strike, provide a more general template to both understand and study other slow-spreading ridge segments, and to gain insight on how the oceanic crust is formed along them.

The world's mid-ocean ridges form a single, connected global ridge system that is part of every ocean, and is the longest mountain range in the world. Geologically active, mid-ocean ridges are key sites of tectonic movement, intimately involved in seafloor spreading. This coursebook presents a multidisciplinary approach to the science of mid-ocean ridges – essential for a complete understanding of global tectonics and geodynamics. Designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, it will also provide a valuable reference for professionals in relevant fields. Background chapters provide a historical introduction and an overview of research techniques, with succeeding chapters covering the structure of the lithosphere and crust, and volcanic, tectonic and hydrothermal processes. A summary and synthesis chapter recaps essential points to consolidate new learning. Accessible to students and professionals working in marine geology, plate tectonics, geophysics, geodynamics, volcanism and oceanography, this is the ideal introduction to a key global phenomenon.

Results suggest that slow-spreading ridges are underlain by small, ephemeral magma chambers. Statistical analysis of isotopic data suggests the Galapagos hotspot is compositionally complex, involving the interaction of at least four distinct mantle endmembers. The plume appears to be sampling a high $\sp3$He/$\sp4$He mantle reservoir that may be the common component of many hotspots. The plume is relatively weak and cool, and interacts strongly with surrounding asthenosphere. Asthenospheric currents tilt the plume in the direction of plate motion. As it bends, the plume thermally entrains surrounding upper mantle. There is also a deep flow of plume toward the adjacent ridge system.

Globally growing demand of energy and mineral resources, reliable future projection of climate processes and the protection of coasts to mitigate the threats of disasters and hazards require a comprehensive understanding of the structure, ongoing processes and genesis of the marine geosphere. Beyond the “classical” research fields in marine geology in current time more general concepts have been evolved integrating marine geophysics, hydrography, marine biology, climatology and ecology. As an umbrella the term “marine geosciences” has been broadly accepted for this new complex field of research and the solutions of practical tasks in the marine realm. The “Encyclopedia of Marine Geosciences” comprises the current knowledge in marine geosciences whereby not only basic but also applied and technical sciences are covered. Through this concept a broad scale of users in the field of marine sciences and techniques is addressed from students and scholars in academia to engineers and decision makers in industry and politics.

Mid-ocean ridges are the primary divergent tectonic margins and generate the ocean crust, which covers ~60% of Earth’s surface. The gabbroic lower ocean crust hosts lithologic and structural diversity varying with spreading rate and magma supply. This dissertation examines lower crustal accretion at ultraslow- and fast-spreading ridges to better constrain crustal accretion and cooling across spreading rates. Trace element compositions of zircon from Atlantis Bank (Southwest Indian Ridge) characterize the final stages of magmatism and the thermal architecture in the lower crust produced along an ultraslow-spreading ridge. U-Pb zircon dates of evolved gabbroic rocks from the fast-spread lower crust at Pito Deep (East Pacific Rise) reveal significant off-axis magmatism, implying locally robust magmatism and relatively slow cooling of this nascent ocean crust. Textural characteristics of gabbroic rocks from Pito Deep highlight the lateral complexity of the fast-spread lower crust, and record increasing degrees of magmatic strain with depth. Synthesizing textural data, U-Pb geochronology, mineral chemistry, and magnetic data from Pito Deep supports a pulsed gabbro glacier flow process for generating the lower ocean crust at magmatically robust fast-spreading ridges.
