Excerpt from Thermionic Tubes in Radio Telegraphy and Telephony The thermionic vacuum tube or valve has, within the last few years, become such an important feature of wireless practice and development that modern radio communication may almost be said to be the application of this versatile device to the reception and transmission of wireless signals. The present book has been written with a view to providing in a single volume an account of the practical development of the vacuum tube and its innumerable applications. An attempt has been made to arrange the matter in a logical manner, and also to give historical details of interest. Every attempt has also been made to give references to the work of those who have developed the science by their inventions or scientific contributions. While writing from a practical experience of nearly all the matter contained in this volume, the Author has taken the fullest advantage of the work of others, with a view to making the book as comprehensive and detailed as possible. A great many references are given, and if any which should have been given are omitted it is due solely to the large size of the volume. In this connection, great difficulty has been experienced in allocating the credit for different developments on account of the absence of international exchange of information. Unless information is freely circulated by publication, misunderstandings as to the rightful credit for inventions are bound to arise. Nevertheless, the Author has made a thorough search of technical literature and patent specifications on the subject with a view to obtaining a correct perspective of the real work of development. Excerpt from The Thermionic Valve and Its Developments in Radio-Telegraphy and Telephony The present extensive use of appliances in modem radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony based on the thermionic emission from an incandescent cathode in a vacuous bulb, of which the Fleming oscillation valve was the first representative, has given rise to much published information on the subject in technical journals as well as to numerous patent specifications. Since most of the recent great advances in wireless telegraphy and telephony are dependent on the employment of these inventions it seemed desirable to collect together in a single volume some of this literature for the assistance of radio-engineers. The author, therefore, accepted the invitation of The Wireless Press, Limited, to write a small book on the practical side of the subject. It has not been deemed necessary to enter very fully into the purely scientific researches on thermionic emission from incandescent substances, because it has already been treated very fully by Prof. O. W. Richardson in his excellent monograph, The Emission of Electricity from Hot Bodies (Long-mans, Green & Co., London). The introductory chapter of the present volume, nevertheless, provides a brief sketch of the researches which led up to the practical applications described in subsequent chapters. The author has, however, felt it necessary to explain in rather full detail the history of this practical application by himself and others, and of the patent litigation which has taken place in the United States and in Great Britain in connection with it, on account of the efforts which have been made to depreciate the Author's work on this subject. The legal judgments in these actions are printed as an appendix, and will enable the reader to view the questions of priority of invention from the standpoint of unbiassed and competent judges. One other matter calls for remark, and that is the question of nomenclature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Researches in Radio Telephony: A Thesis In the last few years the strides in radio telephony have been very rapid. About ten years ago the scientific world was first introduced to the fact that radio telephony was possible; but for the first few years following, the progress in this branch was comparatively slow due to the difficulties in the generation of high frequency currents of the undamped wave type. The only two ways it was found possible to generate currents of this nature was by the arc generator or by the high frequency generator; but in the last six or seven years a new type of generator has come into existance; namely, "The Hot Cathode Vacuum Tube." This generator practically revolutionized the entire field of radio telephony and to a lesser extent radio telegraphy; but had it not been for the war, it is rather doubtful whether our advance in this science in the last four years would have been quite as rapid as it has been. Excerpt from Radio Telephony It need hardly be stated that a good working knowledge of the methods and principles of modern radio telegraphy is necessary for the full appreciation Of the material here set forth, though certain questions common to both types of communication have been here considered in detail.
