This carefully crafted ebook: "The Complete O. Henry Short Stories (Rolling Stones + Cabbages and Kings + Options + Roads of Destiny + The Four Million + The Trimmed Lamp + The Voice of the City + Whirligigs and more)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. William Sydney Porter (1862–1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings. Most of O. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many take place in New York City and deal for the most part with ordinary people: clerks, policemen, waitresses, etc. O. Henry's work is wide-ranging, and his characters can be found roaming the cattle-lands of Texas, exploring the art of the con-man, or investigating the tensions of class and wealth in turn-of-the-century New York. O. Henry had an inimitable hand for isolating some element of society and describing it with an incredible economy and grace of language. Some of his best and least-known work is contained in Cabbages and Kings, a series of stories each of which explores some individual aspect of life in a paralytically sleepy Central American town, while advancing some aspect of the larger plot and relating back one to another. What do the pyramids of Egypt really represent? What could have driven so many to so great, and often so dangerous, an effort? Was the motivation religious or practical? Illustrated with more than 300 photographs and drawings, this book presents an original approach to the subject of pyramid building. It reveals the connection between devices that served both a practical need for survival and a spiritual belief in gods and goddesses. It examines Egyptian technologies and techniques from the origins of pyramid development to the step-by-step details of how the ground was leveled, how the site was oriented, and how the stone was raised and placed to meet at a distant point in the sky. Here the author also asks and answers questions virtually ignored for the last century. He discloses, for example, the ancient use of shadows, now denigrated to the ornamental back-yard sundial, but once an important tool for telling the height of an object, geographical directions, the seasons of the year, and the time of day. He also reinterprets the ancient "stretching of the cord" ceremony, which once was thought to have only religious significance but here is shown as the means of establishing the sides of a pyramid.

The Short Story of Stones is a book inspired by facts. It consists of short stories that form a single unity. At the very beginning, it presents the tragedy of a child experiencing trauma and shows the world through her eyes. Then it illustarates the life of an adult struggling with the consequences of a painful drama. This work is a cascade of the most intimate feelings. Some descriptions are appaling, their message “shock" like electricity, others exude the affirmation of life and faith in its uniqueness. Above all of them there is an unfading hope for a dignified and worthwhile life despite the burden of irreversible fate "Nobody reads anything. If he reads, he understands nothing, and even if he does, he remembers nothing…,” wrote Stanisław Lem prophetically several decades ago. Professor Zimbardo, on the other hand, when accused of “making a show” during a lecture, responded that everyone (possibly including the lecturer himself) slept during traditional lectures and that they did not remember anything from a lecture of this kind. Over the seventy pages of “The Short Story of Stones”, the author has recorded scenes from life that, after reading, cannot be forgotten. They might be pushed aside, considered impossible, but they cannot be erased from memory. This offers readers, despite the small scale of this tome, a wealth of immutable experiences, and perhaps irrevocable knowledge that leaves much food for thought. This knowledge and these experiences, in my opinion – having worked almost forty years with victims – are essential for therapists, regardless of studies, training and self-therapy, or maybe even in tandem with them.
