Paul wrote to one of the farthest Christian churches at the time, in Thessalonica, Macedonia. It is obvious from the content of his epistles to them, that they were a sound church... it often happens that those at a distance from the source tend to be the most ardent. He, and his fellow Apostles, commended the church for its faith. Yet, they called upon the Christians there to do even more. It is a tendency amongst modern Christians to leave everything to the pastor and deacons. But, this leads to laziness. A short book has been added to the letter to the Thessalonians - Jude. It wisely tells us to remember our place in God's economy - we are created beings, of lesser power than demons. Even the archangel Michael dared not oppose the mighty Satan in his own power, but deferred to the Lord. A lesson all charismatics should learn, quickly!

This commentary on The Letter of Jude engages the Greek text and is designed for pastors, theological students, and lay readers. Jude, a brother of Jesus, warns members of the early Jesus movement against intruders in their midst and exhorts those believers not to deviate from the fundamental tenets of the faith in behavior and belief. It also provides a unique analysis that links Jude with 1 Corinthians in terms of their authors literary style, Jewish backgrounds, and closely correlated descriptions of the errorists described in both letters. The Letter of Jude is highly relevant to Christians in the twenty-first century. Even many of those now calling themselves evangelical have abandoned any pretence to adhering to biblical doctrines. This commentary seeks to emphasise Jude message: contend for biblical truth, and live so that the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is alive, true, and liberating.

When we overlook Paul's letters to the Thessalonians, we miss out. Paul's letters to the church in Thessalonica are often considered two of the less important of his letters, but they were written to a very important city with very important issues. In addition to addressing the issue of Christ's return and the problem of people who refused to work, these letters model a truly loving relationship between a pastor and a congregation. In 1 & 2 Thessalonians Verse by Verse, respected New Testament scholar Grant R. Osborne shows us that in a world that centered on the divinity of the emperor and the demands to participate in the worship of the gods, the Thessalonians desperately needed to be given resources that would help them withstand the pressure to conform. These letters provide us with a thrilling example of affection among believers in extremely hard times and help us see how that affection can make severe trials bearable. The Osborne New Testament Commentaries, by respected professor and author Grant R. Osborne, are for people seeking a straightforward explanation of the text in its context, avoiding either oversimplification or technical complexity. Osborne brings out the riches of the New Testament, making each book accessible for pastors and all who consider themselves students of Scripture.

The Letter of Jude has a sharp cutting edge which exposes raw flesh. That indeed is the real problem: flesh in the church. This little letter will cut through that and expose it, and that is going to sting. But we are sensitive, and the real reason that we neglect a passage of scripture is that we do not like it. The church can be destroyed from inside; it is not external dangers, it is internal dangers we need to be concerned about, and this is Jude's concern. Every Christian must live dangerously. This world is not occupied territory, so it is the most dangerous thing to be part of the church.

In this commentary Gene Green reads Paul's two letters to the Thessalonians in light of the canon of Scripture and of new knowledge about the first-century world of Thessalonica. This fruitful approach helps illuminate the impact of the gospel on its original readers and, in turn, shows how potent a force it can be for the church and society today. The book begins with an in-depth study of the Thessalonians themselves -- their history, land, socioeconomic conditions, and religious environment. This fascinating discussion gives the necessary context for fully appreciating the circumstances surrounding the founding of the city's first church and the subsequent struggles of the Thessalonian believers to live out their Christian faith. The main body of the book provides informed verse-by-verse commentary on 1 & 2 Thessalonians that extracts the fullest possible meaning from these important New Testament texts. As Green's exposition shows, the Thessalonian scriptures are especially valuable as letters of friendship and for showing Paul's pastoral concern for the many areas in which the Thessalonians needed guidance. Some of Paul's purposes are to thank the new believers for their steadfastness amid suffering, to encourage them in their trials, to urge them not to neglect their daily work, and, no less important, to teach them about the future of believers who die before Christ returns. Indeed, the matter of the last things and the second coming of Christ so permeates these texts that they are often called Paul's eschatological letters. Filled with new information about ancient society, this commentary will fast become a standard reference work for Bible study. By carefully bridging the biblical and modern worlds, Green shows with clarity and warmth the continuing relevance of 1 & 2 Thessalonians for contemporary readers.
