Nantucket is an island approximately thirty miles off the Massachusetts coast. Along with Tuckernuck and Muskeget Islands, they compose Nantucket County. The island was discovered by the Englishman Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602, and was first settled in 1659 by Quakers from Salisbury, Massachusetts, originally from West Country in England. Though Nantuckets days of glory are long gone, it is still remembered in mainstream culture as the initial setting of the fictional tale Moby Dick, as well as a handful of limericks that begin with, There once was a man from Nantucket Author Bill Hoadley is a son of Nantucket, and in his autobiographical book, Please Walk Your Horses Up This Hill, he shares with readers the rich history and notable personalities that have walked through or lived in this island since the first Western settlers arrived. It’s 1999 and the world is falling apart at the seams. The sky is afire, the oceans are rising—and mankind is to blame. While the spoils of the 20th Century dwindle, Jack Finnegan lives on the fringes in his decaying mansion, struggling to keep his life afloat and his loved ones safe while battling that most modern of diseases—AIDS. As the New Millennium approaches, Jack’s former lover, a famous photographer reveling in the world's decay, gifts him with a mysterious elixir called Fusax, a medicine rumored to cure the incurable AIDS. But soon, the "side effects" of Fusax become more apparent, and Jack gets mixed up with a bizarre entourage of rock stars, Japanese scientists, corporate executives, AIDS victims, and religious terrorists. While these larger players compete to control mankind's fate in the 21st Century, Jack is forced to choose his own role in the World's End, and how to live with it. Originally published in 1997, Glimmering is a visionary mix of fantasy and science fiction about a world in which humanity struggles to cope with the ever-approaching "End of the End."

The Sugar Islands written by Alec Waugh and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-28 with Travel categories.

Alec Waugh first saw the West Indies on a trip round the world in 1926 when his ship called in at Guadeloupe. Fifteen months later he returned for a long stay at Martinique; it was the beginning of a lifelong interest in these fascinating islands that were to provide him with the material for many books and articles. In The Sugar Islands, a book to be dipped into at leisure, Mr. Waugh has selected pieces from his writings, with the intention of compiling both a travelogue (there is a wealth of interesting information for the would-be traveller about the ways of life and customs of each island) and a chronological commentary on the development of the islands during the last thirty years. The book is divided into four parts. In the first, the author gives an idea of the background of the West Indies by drawing a detailed picture of the colourful life of Martinique. He tells the story of a 17th-century Frenchman who joined the famous pirates of Tortugja and the history of the long bloodbath that preceeded the declaration of independence of Haiti, the Black Republic. The second part of the book comprises four character sketches, including three stories of black magic, and two sections deal with the individual charm and interest of each of the islands: Montserrat, Barbados, Anguilla, Trinidad, St. Vincent, Tortola, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saba, Antigua, Dominica and Puerto Rico.
