In this artist's book Thilo Westermann's color pencil drawings and reverse plexi paintings are reproduced in their original size. The enlargements of details presented here correspond in terms of ratios and dot size to the large-format Diasec one-off prints that Westermann has produced after completing his reverse plexi paintings.In addition to theoretical art essays, these illustrations of his work are also supplemented by views of exhibitions as well as images from the photo series entitled Dispositive - these oscillate between presenting real hangings of the works and faked arrangements. In der vorliegenden Dissertationsschrift untersucht Thilo H. G. Westermann das Fortleben der vielgestaltigen mythologischen Figur des Pan in der bildenden Kunst zwischen Klassizismus und Moderne. Er entwickelt hierfür eine umfassende, in der Forschung längst überfällige Typologie, die Pan als arkadischen Hirtengott, Schreckensbringer und Allgott greifbar macht. Die Unterscheidung dieser Wesensmerkmale dient dem Autor als Instrumentarium, die Rezeption des Pan im Moment von dessen bildkünstlerischer wie ideengeschichtlicher Auflösung zu Beginn der Moderne zu erforschen. In dieser historischen Umbruchphase wird die Figur des Pan so nicht nur als Projektionsfläche für die Stimmungen bei der Betrachtung gemalter Landschaften, sondern auch als Denkbegriff psychoanalytischer wie lebensphilosophischer Konzepte ?avant la lettre? nachgewiesen.

In many contemporary societies we encounter iconoclasm breaking out with renewed violence. Iconoclastic actions against objects of visual material culture and testimonials of history act as dynamite in the public sphere. They are expressions of political, religious, national, and identity conflicts. Even the freedom of art is threatened by censorship and cancel culture. Based on case studies from different world regions, contemporary iconoclasms in art, media, and cultural heritage are critically analyzed from both a global and an interdisciplinary perspective. Divided into three sections, the book discusses attacks on monuments and memorials, idol disputes in museums and the visual arts, and forms of mediated iconoclasm in contemporary art.
